John 19:16-22 ESV

So they took Jesus, 17 and he went out, bearing his own cross, to the place called The Place of a Skull, which in Aramaic is called Golgotha. 18 There they crucified him, and with him two others, one on either side, and Jesus between them. 19 Pilate also wrote an inscription and put it on the cross. It read, “Jesus of Nazareth, the King of the Jews.” 20 Many of the Jews read this inscription, for the place where Jesus was crucified was near the city, and it was written in Aramaic, in Latin, and in Greek. 21 So the chief priests of the Jews said to Pilate, “Do not write, ‘The King of the Jews,’ but rather, ‘This man said, I am King of the Jews.’” 22 Pilate answered, “What I have written I have written.”

JESUS OF NAZARETH, THE KING OF THE JEWS

It’s is comprehensible that Jesus, the Creator of the world, was crucified. Hindsight is the best sight. Today, it’s not diffficult for us to understand why. The written word reveals us the reason. We read in Isaiah 53:5, “But he was pierced for our transgressions;

he was crushed for our iniquities;

upon him was the chastisement that brought us peace,

and with his wounds we are healed.”

In the New Testament, we read of Peter’s writing about what Isaiah had written 700 years earlier, that is, “He himself bore our sins in his body on the tree, that we might die to sin and live to righteousness. By his wounds you have been healed.”[1 Pet 2:24]

Interestingly, Pilate added an inscription at His cross, “Jesus of Nazareth, the King of the Jews.” Which were written in 3 languages, namely, Aramaic, Latin and Greek. Sarcastic as it was intended to but ironically it’s true. While the jews wanted to change the inscription as ‘a’ king, Pilate decided to it unchanged, that Jesus is ‘the’ king of the Jews.

Far from being incidental, “The King of the Jews” as a title had both messianic and political implications. Kings in Old Testament were anointed with oil as a sign of God’s approval (see 1 Kings 1:39) And, the title ‘Messiah’ means the “Anointed One.” As the Son of David, Jesus was chosen by God to fulfill the Davidic Covenant and rule on the throne in Jerusalem. When the magi came to Jerusalem seeking the King of the Jews, they most likely had in mind a future political leader, much to King Herod’s chagrin.

Sadly, many Jews are still waiting for the wrong kind of king. Revelation 19:16 describes the day when Jesus will return to rule over the earth. At that time, the ancient prophecies of an earthly kingdom of God will be fulfilled, and no one will doubt that Jesus is the King of kings and the Lord of lords. Every nation, tribe, and tongue will bow to the King of the Jews (see Rom 14:11; Philippians 2:10 and Rev 5:9).
