We are so excited to have Nic Bortolin, head brewer at 14 Cannons in Westlake Village, CA, on the show with us. He drops by to talk about some very exciting news at the brewery. We find out why consumers are overpaying for beer, the closure of some big craft breweries, and some heavy drinkers at Disneyworld.
Greg kicks off the beer research with K-17, a Czech Dark Lager from 14 Cannons. Luckily Nic is around to provide all the details and process. In addition, Nic is drinking Yuzu for Papa, a slated wheat beer from Green Cheek Brewing.
The big news of the day is the official release date and live podcast for our collaboration beer with 14 Cannons on March 10. We still need help naming our Coffee Kölsch, so please help us out! Nic also talks about the release party for Wreck Yo Ship, a 10.5% triple IPA, on February 26. Flex gets him to talk about making such a big beer and keeping it balanced. And this year, they’re opening their Pink Boots brew day to the public, so make sure you check that out! The guys also talk about the Super Bowl and how awesome that halftime show was.

Breaking news in the craft world, Modern Times is closing most of its locations. 14 Cannons is hosting their first beer festival in May; stay tuned for more on that! The recently acquired Oscar Blues quietly closed one of their taprooms. Are we seeing the “reckoning” of the craft world? Nic lends his expertise to the closures of all these breweries. According to the Treasury Department, AB InBev and Molson are forcing people to overpay for beer. Nic talks about the difficulty in distribution laws and getting beer to market. The CEO of Threes Brewing is causing quite a stir after some horrible tweets. And two drunk sisters fight naked at Disneyworld; who knew Disney could be that fun?
