On today’s Bible Answer Man broadcast (04/05/21), Hank returns to the Gospel of Matthew, picking back up where he left off in chapter 4. In verse 18, we see Jesus calling the first of his disciples—the brothers Peter and Andrew, and James and John the sons of Zebedee. All four were unlearned fishermen. But after three years with Jesus, they became the wisest of all men. Skeptics today are fond of pointing out that these fishermen could hardly have written the gospels or the epistles. Instead, they claim that they were forged by educated people living outside of Palestine. Evidence, however, points in an opposite direction. John, son of Zebedee, was a fisherman as indicated here in Matthew 4. But the operative word is “was.” Not only did he receive the ultimate education from the Master Teacher, but following the resurrection, he devoted himself to the study and ministry of the Word of God. Jesus called these men to become fishers of men. He would train them for the great work of bringing people into the kingdom of heaven. Whatever their occupation—or ours—we are called to the greatest of all professions, that of being witnesses to the resurrection of Christ.
