We experiment with concepts in guns, gear and training; all while having conversations about interesting things, with interesting people. Yes, we will talk about guns, but not just guns because humans weren’t meant to be one dimensional. The gun is merely a tool and we believe the person is the true weapon. We want to explore different ways to make this “weapon” better in mind, body and spirit. Experiment...everyday.

“Protecting Americana means more than just owning American guns—it's about celebrating our history, building community, and being proud of who we are.” Episode Summary In this episode of The Gun Experiment, we chop it up with Eli Duckworth, head of marketing at Alchemy Custom Weaponry and a proud 1911 gun owner. We kick off with some laughs about golf, wrestling, and the Hulkster’s passing, dive into laws about losing your guns and the controversy around brandishing, and share thoughts on current events—from presidential fitness tests to Sydney Sweeney's viral ad. Eli gives us the inside scoop on his recent trip to Colt, the legacy of case-hardened steel, and his personal connection to Colt firearms history. We also review some innovative gear like the Magna Lens shooting glasses and the Caldwell Clay Copter, and end on a wild note discussing robotic rabbits and the ethics of using pets to feed zoo animals. The episode is a mix of gun rights, American firearm history, gear reviews, and plenty of humor. Call to Action 1. Join our mailing list: Thegunexperiment.com 2. Key Takeaways The passing of icons like the Hulkster can remind us how much these figures shape our sense of American identity—and why nostalgia matters. Brandishing laws are a gray area; sometimes just making your firearm visible can de-escalate a situation, but the legal landscape is complicated and often varies by state. The saga of the McCloskeys highlights the red tape and emotional toll that defensive gun owners can face, even after gubernatorial pardons. Colt remains a pillar of Americana and firearms innovation—the company’s tradition of presentation guns and case-hardened steel connects past and present. The Magna Lens shooting glasses bring real innovation to range safety by eliminating the classic “ear pro-glasses pinch.” We debated the role of fitness and competition in schools, why Sydney Sweeney's marketing worked, and how media stirs controversy. Using robotic decoys for hunting and invasive species control is the future—but when it comes to using pets as zoo food, things get morally tricky. Preparedness Spectrum: There’s a big difference between “normal” and “super prepper”—but even carrying a plate carrier or get-home bag puts you ahead of most. Modularity is King: Eberlestock’s modular systems (like the Fade series and Recon harness) allow you to customize your loadout for hunting, EDC, or tactical scenarios. "Setting personal goals, both in training and in life, fuels growth and resilience." Episode Summary In this episode, I was joined in the studio by Rachel Maloney from Night Fision and Glow Rhino, filling in for Big Keith, who was on vacation. We kicked things off with some fun banter about keeping up with our kids and how humbling it is to realize the next generation can run circles around us at the gym or pool. We covered a lot of ground, starting with current happenings in the firearms industry, like the overwhelming topic of the SIG P320 and ongoing debates about product safety and consumer trust. Rachel shared her unique perspective on firearms training, emphasizing the importance of mental “software” over chasing hardware benchmarks. On the news front, we dived into California’s ammo background check ruling, reflected on the impact of suppressor tax changes, and how new state laws keep making life challenging for responsible gun owners—especially in states like NY and CA. Rachel also gave us a deep dive on Night Fision’s new optic plate and sight system, breaking down how they’re simplifying the “co-witness” confusion for everyday defensive shooters. For Top Gear, I reviewed the Q Sling from Flatline Fiber Co., and Rachel did a brilliant hands-on walkthrough of the new Night Fision optic plates. We laughed over a unique gin and tonic from my local farm stand, and wrapped up the show highlighting “good guy with a gun” stories, plus off-topic news like the return of the flip phone summer. Key Takeaways Firearms training progresses from chasing numbers to mastering mindset—the “software” matters more than split times or draw speed. The SIG P320 controversy remains a hot topic; everyone wants closure and meaningful solutions for consumer safety. New York and California gun owners face relentless legislative hurdles—any “win” in court (like CA’s ammo background check reversal) is met with more laws. Responsible gun ownership includes staying vigilant in the courts and supporting organizations like SAF, GOA, and FPC. Quality gear matters: the Flatline Fiber Co. Qela Sling offers an intuitive, minimalist design, while Night Fision’s new plate-and-sight combos make the co-witness game simpler and more reliable. Nutrition and self-care for shooters is just as important—whole foods, real meals, and planning ahead support both physical and shooting performance. Real-life “good guy with a gun” situations highlight the importance of training—ownership doesn’t equal skill. The next generation is rediscovering the value of less screen time (flip phone summer!) and more real-world presence. Guest Information Rachel Maloney is a firearms instructor, industry pro, and works with both Glow Rhino (tritium keychains and tools) and Night Fision (tritium night sights and now optic plates). "Don’t settle for 'just good enough' when it comes to liberty." Episode Summary In this lively episode of The Gun Experiment, we are joined by returning guests Ben Dewalt and Rachel Maloney for an in-depth discussion on current Second Amendment issues, gun culture, and the evolving landscape of firearms legislation in America. The group tackles timely topics like the suppressor movement, state reciprocity agreements, and the Rhode Island assault weapons ban—unpacking how such regulations impact everyday gun owners. The conversation also veers into broader societal issues, comparing limits on firearms to other forms of personal risk, like driving and unhealthy lifestyle choices. The hosts advocate for the value and resurgence of practical trades, such as gunsmithing, stressing the importance of skills that can’t be shipped by drone or replaced by AI. Rachel Maloney offers insights into the intersection of design and firearms, while Ben Dewalt shares poignant anecdotes from the front lines of the 2A community. The team discusses the impact of financial discrimination against the gun industry, how to support pro-2A businesses, and the need for unity and resilience in the face of increasing restrictions. "Don’t underestimate the power of the Second Amendment community." Episode Summary In this episode of The Gun Experiment, we are joined by returning guest Kurt Sills, cofounder of Blue Alpha Gear, for an engaging and often humorous roundtable discussion. We kick it off with Keith's maiden voyage using a leather shoulder rig for his 1911, sparking a broader chat about the evolution and challenges of everyday carry (EDC) gear, concealment, and holster innovation. Kurt offers an inside look at Blue Alpha’s ongoing efforts to innovate products —especially their focus on lightweight and modular belts, accessories, and the surprising lack of updates in EDC solutions. The trio also tackles recent Second Amendment news, highlighting the small but significant legislative victories around the Hearing Protection Act and how public activism is moving the needle. With current events on the table, they dissect New York’s fresh wave of restrictive gun legislation, spotlight Oklahoma’s expanded defensive display rights, and weigh the real-world impacts of these laws on self-defense. Lighter moments include racing conversations about the WienerMobile at the Indy 500, wild Florida man antics, and speculation about the CIA using Star Wars fan sites for covert communication. Throughout, the episode explores themes of innovation, community activism, self-reliance, and the constant battle for free speech on and off campus. Call to Action 1. Check them out at saf.org Key Takeaways Lack of EDC Innovation: Despite huge advances in battle and duty belts, concealed carry gear innovation has plateaued due to the limitations of compatibility with daily wear and the industry’s slow movement. Legislative Update: The Hearing Protection Act advanced, largely thanks to robust grassroots action—showing activism and calls to legislators matter. New York Gun Legislation: NY continues to push aggressive anti-gun laws (including 50-cal bans and forced buybacks), contrasting sharply with states like Oklahoma, which recently expanded the rights of defensive firearm display. Importance of Community: Even those in restrictive states should stay engaged and support national efforts; collective activism can eventually result in broader freedoms. Gear Recommendations: Blue Alpha’s EDC belt is lightweight, reliable, and good enough for daily wear—plus new accessories and medical pouches are on the way. Their discreet fanny pack for subcompacts is a functional, niche tool that’s winning converts. The Role of Free Speech: A healthy gun community—and society at large—requires a free, open exchange of ideas and the ability to challenge the echo chamber, both in higher ed and daily dialogue. Guest Information Kurt Sills Role: Cofounder of Blue Alpha Gear Website: bluealphabelts.com About: Kurt and the Blue Alpha team are leading innovators of tactical and EDC belts, focused on making modern, lightweight, and modular gear for law enforcement, military, and civilians alike. I couldn't find where on spotify to leave a review from this episode, so I dropped it here. I've been listening since day 1, your guests just keep getting better every episode so great job! That being said, this has been my favorite episode hands down! I have actually almost applied to be a warden in my state twice now, with the emphasis in trying to talk our dnr into starting a canine unit, hearing john talk about doing just that has made me want to do it even more now. Once I'm closer to retiring from what I'm doing now, I'm definitely going to do it. So thank you for bringing him on to talk! P.S. Drink recommendation....have you ever tried a "Long Drink"? It's a drink that came from Finland when they hosted the Olympics and wanted a national drink to give the athletes (go figure now they give them cardboard beds to dissuade fraternization lol) that is gin, juniper berries, grapefruit, and carbonation. They are so refreshing and light. Everyone I have given one to has said it is the best thing they have tried in a long time, so next time you're at the store pick up a few cans to try out during the show. Thanks again keep up the great work, and sorry you live in a commie state and can't hunt suppressed like I do. Before we get into tonight’s show I’m pleased to announce that we have an awesome new show sponsor! Prepaid legal services like NY TAC Defense fill the gap left by banned insurance plans. Court Decisions Matter: Recent appellate decisions on age-based restrictions could set the stage for nationwide change. The right to bear arms—regardless of age (18+)—is being hotly debated and shaped by ongoing litigation. Responsible Gun Ownership: Safe storage, constant awareness, and legal prep are non-negotiable. Irresponsibility puts freedoms at risk for everyone—not just the individual. Political Hypocrisy Persists: Whether it’s politicians flouting laws or celebrities’ over-the-top virtue signaling, gun owners are often left to navigate double standards—while also being selectively targeted. AI is Changing the Game: ChatGPT and other AI tools are streamlining legal and research tasks, but can also introduce errors. Being polite to AI may actually yield better results—a surprisingly human lesson for the digital age.
