Do you dream of living life on your own terms, full of purpose and the ability to choose what’s best for you? Are you ready to live stoked? You’ve come to the right place! In this podcast, we will explore what it means to live stoked. To live a life on your terms, one where we’ve tossed away the pressures of roles, expectations, and identities that have been put on you and that you did not choose, is a bold choice. Frankly, it’s a series of small choices in micro-moments that lead to a bold life. I am Sarah Bettman, coach, consultant, and speaker, but more importantly, I’m a person who found myself waking up in the wrong life and needed to find a way to me. I am on a mission to unravel the things we tell ourselves, the roles and/or identities we’ve taken on, and the expectations that drive our decision making, so that we can begin to live our most authentic and stoked lives. My guests and I will share our stories, solutions, and multitude of ideas…since one size definitely doesn’t not fit all. My hope is that you will find something meaningful for you, in the moment, that will move you forward on your path.

In this episode, I chat with creative coach Lisa Hopkins, whose journey highlights living intentionally and embracing personal agency. We redefine "being stoked" as a deeper engagement with life and true joy, exploring Lisa's evolution from a shy girl in Canada to an influential figure in dance and coaching. Our discussion focuses on the transformative nature of coaching, the importance of authenticity, and cultivating creative possibilities for everyone, not just artists. We also touch on diverse inspirations for personal growth and the significance of being present to find joy amid challenges. This conversation encapsulates the essence of living stoked—choosing authenticity and growth. Meet Lisa: Lisa Hopkins partners with creative people who want to be challenged and energized to explore, recognize and celebrate their potential and break through fears and limiting beliefs that hold them back from being artists in all areas of their lives. She has lived and worked alongside inspiring creative people her whole life. Lisa has experienced first hand what it means to lead with passion and to follow her heart . She knows what it feels like to perform at the highest level and leave it all on the dance floor (literally & metaphorically). Lisa understands that success is often the very thing that stands in the way of becoming all that she can be in this world. She refuses to be defined by what she’s done, or to make choices based on what she thinks she should be doing next. Lisa believes that the journey is the thing, that life is a gift and that possibilities exist in every moment if we choose to open our minds and hearts. Today my guest, Courtney O’Brien and I are diving deep into the complex world of work-life balance, personal fulfillment, and the empowering journey toward authentic living. Courtney has recently transitioned from a 22-year career in beverage marketing to embarking on an entrepreneurial path with her new venture, The Outlier Initiative. In this episode, we explore the often-unappreciated toil that comes from acting based on perceived responsibilities, as Courtney reflects on her past experiences. We'll look at distinguishing tasks that align with personal values versus organizational demands, touching on the grieving process that leaving a job can feel like. Courtney shares poignant insights on balancing family life, shedding the "supermom" persona, and breaking free from the cycle of linking productivity to self-worth. Meet Courtney: Courtney O’Brien is a seasoned marketing leader with 22 years of experience driving the success of iconic brands at global powerhouses like Coca-Cola, Danone, and E&J Gallo Winery. With a track record of turning under-the-radar products into household names—like launching Coke Zero into a $1 billion brand and leading Apothic Red to dominate its category—Courtney knows what it takes to win in the competitive beverage market. As the founder of The Outlier Initiative, Courtney brings her expertise to growth-stage brands, helping them cut through the noise and achieve breakout success. Her approach is rooted in creating deep human connections between brands and consumers, clearly defining how a brand will win, and activating a bold ecosystem around it that is unconstrained by category norms. Welcome to part four of my 29029 series (the first three are linked below). In this episode, I share my deep thoughts on the journey during the 29029 event, where I pushed myself to complete three marathons over three days. I reflect on the dual perspectives we can adopt in life—one of rigid expectations versus one of embracing growth through our choices. My personal struggles during the event show the unique nature of challenges and the importance of resilience. I candidly discuss a pivotal moment of doubt at mile 17, where I learned that quitting not only affects how I view myself but also limits my potential. The support from fellow participants and coaches reinforced the value of community in overcoming obstacles. Crossing the finish line, I ponder the narratives we construct around failure and success, aiming to cultivate a mindset that celebrates personal growth. My journey serves as a metaphor for life’s challenges, promoting resilience and the power of support as I plan for future adventures. 29029 Episodes: 18. Becoming More of Me 35. Today I have invited my guest, Toby Mildon, to discuss the critical yet often overlooked aspects of diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI), especially regarding disability. In this episode, Toby shares personal experiences, from misconceptions about his relationship to navigating discrimination and discovering his identity. We discuss the differing emphases on race, gender, and disability in DEI initiatives in the US and UK, stressing the need for genuine understanding and prioritization in organizations. We'll also explore societal portrayals of disability, the concept of "inspiration porn," and the role of empathy in leadership. Toby also introduces the SEEDS model to tackle unconscious biases. Meet Toby: Toby Mildon is a Diversity & Inclusion Architect who is passionate about creating diverse workplaces and cultures that are inclusive. He has helped some of the UK's largest companies, including the BBC, Deloitte, Sony, and HarperCollins Publishing, improve staff retention, brand innovation, productivity, and performance. Toby's lifelong passion for Diversity and Inclusion stems from his personal and professional experiences with inequality, and his belief that building a culture of inclusive growth is essential for organizational success. Toby's Inclusive Growth Culture Programme helps businesses implement real change and avoid shallow and superficial diversity initiatives. If a company has more than 250 employees, or is intending to grow to this size, Toby is the right person to help drive the business forward and achieve new heights. He speaks passionately about how moving beyond superficial diversity initiatives and building a culture of inclusive growth is essential. It addresses the underlying issues of inequality and creates a sustainable framework for continued growth and success. Toby's book, Inclusive Growth: Future-proof your business by creating a diverse workplace, provides a practical framework that enables you to deliver a sustainable, diverse and inclusive workplace that allows your organization to grow. The book helps you understand how to strategically align diversity and inclusion to organizational growth, change the culture and motivate senior leaders to ‘walk the talk’ for inclusivity, design and implement a sustainable inclusivity infrastructure, work as a whole organization rather than in HR isolation, and celebrate your inclusivity to become an employer of choice in your industry. In today's episode, I share an unexpectedly profound lesson from a simple morning walk and my time spent with a whale. Yes, you read that right! A whale has mysteriously been enjoying life in the local harbor close to our home. And as I find myself skipping my rigorous training session to spend time observing my new aquatic friend, this encounter sparks reflections on the importance of slowing down, tuning into natural rhythms, and observing life with mindful presence. This time helped me create parallels between my serene observations with the work I do in coaching, and how taking time to understand cadence and nuance can guide us in both personal growth and effective leadership. When we hear that it would be hard for us to be replaced, oftentimes we take it as a compliment. Yes it feels good to know that we are able to contribute, but have you ever paused to think about whether or not you are so indispensable that your management won’t give you up? Or that you are viewed as someone different in your role, and are unable to get the raise and/or promotion you deserve because it would take more than one person to replace you? That is what we are discussing in this episode. Sometimes we need to stop being indispensable and do what is best for us! Welcome to another inspiring episode of Live Stoked Lead Stoked. Today we’re diving deep into a story of transformation and resilience with our incredible guest, Diane Schroeder. From battalion chief to harnessing the power of personal coaching, Diane opens up about her journey of living authentically and aligning with her core values of joy, connection, and authenticity. We discuss the tough transitions, the emotional toll of emergency service work, and the crucial turning points that led both Diane and myself to pivot away from firefighting towards new paths that honor our true selves. Meet Diane: The Fire Inside Her, LLC started as a blog and space where I could share my experiences and heal my broken parts. Learning to become my authentic self through connection, self-care, and community was the key to my healing. I quickly learned that I was not alone and started to meet travelers on the journey to authenticity—women in the busy, messy, lonely, and stressful phase of life. But we weren’t discussing it, so I started taking the uncomfortable. Then 2020 kicked everyone in the softies, adding to the mental load of an already overfull plate. Many years ago, I found myself wondering if there is something more to this thing called life. I was ready for something to change, but wasn’t sure how to get started…or even frankly, what to change. I dreamed of living a life that was on my own terms, full of purpose and the ability to make choices that were best me, but wasn’t sure how to get there. Is this you? Have you wondered some of the same things? If so, you’ve come to the right place! Welcome to Live Stoked, Lead Stoked where we explore both sides of work and life and what it means to have the best of both. Why stoked? For me it evokes something deeper, more compelling than, say, living your best life or being the best leader…though it’s basically the same. To live stoked is to live a life on our terms, one where we’ve learned to navigate the pressures of roles, expectations, and identities that have been put upon us, many we have not chosen. By extension this means we can lead stoked and create cultures where people can fulfill their most stoked life…and round and round we go. Though both living and leading stoked may seem like a bold choices, they really are just a series of small choices in micro-moments over time. It’s not always easy, but it is most definitely worth it. I am Sarah Bettman, coach, consultant, and speaker, but more importantly, I’m a person who found herself waking up in the wrong life and needing to find a way to me….to my own stoked life. It is my passion to unravel the things we tell ourselves, the roles and/or identities we’ve taken on, and the expectations that drive our decision making, so that we can begin to make choices that ultimately means we live and lead stoked. My guests and I will share our stories, solutions, and multitude of ideas about life, work, and everything in between…since one size definitely doesn’t not fit all. My hope is that you will find this time together meaningful, perhaps event inspirational, and that you walk away with easy to implement actions to move you forward on your path.…
