Our travels in Ireland continued where we travelled to rural West Cork to meet Paul O’Brien who we featured in our printed magazine back in March 2021. It was really interesting to chat more in-depth about his business and how things have been since Covid and how it's shaped his empire, Paul is a furniture designer and maker based in rural West Cork, Ireland. Originally from Dublin, with a fine arts background and fine furniture training in London, he returned to Ireland to work at a renowned furniture studio. After honing his skills alongside skilled international craftspeople, he chose to establish his own workshop, driven by a desire to work with his hands, create beautiful objects, and be his own boss. His approach combines traditional craftsmanship with modern design, aiming to produce world-class, functional, and aesthetically pleasing furniture. Paul focuses on using solid timber and a mix of hand skills and machinery, ensuring every piece embodies a fine balance of various design elements. His philosophy stresses that crafted objects should add value to daily rituals, enhancing them with thoughtful design and integrity. WANT TO SUPPORT THIS PODCAST? Our travels continued in Ireland where we travelled to see a maker who we've featured previously - Sam Gleeson, a Bladesmith from County Clare, Ireland We believe it’s essential to document the evolution of these artisans, offering insights into their journeys and progress. A story that particularly caught our attention and wanted to hear more about was Sam Gleeson’s endeavour to establish a craft school in Ireland, a project he hinted at back in Edition One in 2020. With a scarcity of craft schools available, and nothing else like it in Ireland, it’s crucial to support individuals like Sam who are dedicated to preserving traditional skills and providing the next generation with opportunities to explore craft as a viable career path. Our first stop on our recent trip was with Kurtis Scott - a luthier based in Bangor, Northern Ireland. Pict Guitars was founded with a vision to create sustainably made, handcrafted instruments that are both visually and audibly stunning. The journey of Pict Guitars began in January 2019 when Kurtis enrolled at the prestigious Lagan Lutherie School under Master Luthier Sam Irwin. Concurrently, a role was secured at a renowned guitar brand in Northern Ireland. With passion and dedication, Kurtis swiftly progressed through various roles within the company while crafting his own first handcrafted guitar. Over the years, his own ideas about guitar making crystallized. As a passionate musician, Kurtis recognised the desire for guitars that were not just to be kept in their cases, but beautiful instruments that beckoned to be played. With a profound connection to nature, the commitment to sustainability became a core principle, leading to the exploration of incredible tonewoods. WANT TO SUPPORT THIS PODCAST? Our last podcast in Australia was with the lovely Alison Jackson and Dan Lorrimer. We featured their story in Ed.3 of the We Are Makers Magazine. We were so delighted to finally meet in person in Braidwood where they live and work. Alison Jackson and Dan Lorrimer are metalsmiths, partners in both life and business. Known for their shared love of working with their hands, they often describe their roles as "Dan does big metals, and Alison does small metals," though their world of making is much more intertwined than that. Alison's background is in traditional silversmithing and jewellery, while Dan is trained in contemporary sculpture, tool-making, and machining. Together, they run Ferro Forma, a metalsmithing workshop specializing in handcrafted, small-batch edition objects for both individuals and homes. The name "Ferro Forma" reflects their craft, with "Ferro" meaning ferrous or iron, and "Forma" representing form. This name captures the essence of their work, as everything they create or shape begins with iron. Whether it's the tools they use or the materials they employ, iron serves as the foundation that makes their craft possible. WANT TO SUPPORT THIS PODCAST? On our Australia trip we took a bus to Braidwood to visit Lea Durie, who we featured in Ed.9 of our We Are Makers Magazine. It's always great to connect with someone who you've spoke to so much online and over email to then meet in person. We are so thankful for these experiences and connections we get to have through our mission. From Lea's early experiments with clay in fifth grade to her current life as a full-time ceramicist in Braidwood, Southern New South Wales, her journey is one of continuous discovery and dedication. Initially trained as a landscape architect, her love for pottery was rekindled through a night class during a lonely stint in Melbourne. This reawakening led her back to clay after various life detours, including a significant career shift and raising a family. Her professional turning point came with a visual arts degree focused on ceramics and a transformative mentorship that guided her into taking her craft from a passionate hobby to a serious business. On our Australian journey, we visited Doug and Danika in Albury, NSW, whose story graced the cover of our seventh edition of We Are Makers. Meeting them and their family was a highlight of our trip. Danika and Doug met while studying design at the College of Fine Arts in Sydney in 2005. Their passion for letterpress began in the UK, where they started collecting wood type blocks from charming markets. Back in Australia in 2011, they won a fierce eBay auction for a 1920s Chandler & Price letterpress named 'Wendy', previously housed in a soon-to-be-demolished hospital. With little experience but plenty of enthusiasm, they learned the art of letterpress from Des, a former printer and mentor who taught at a printing museum in Sydney. Des, who once taught letterpress through a rigorous five-year apprenticeship, generously shared his weekends to help them master the craft. WANT TO SUPPORT THIS PODCAST? On our trip to Australia, we took a flight to Adelaide to meet Heath who was featured in our 2nd Edition of We Are Makers. We were so excited to finally meet and to hear how business has been since March 2021. Timberwolf Design was initiated part-time by its founder Heath Polkinghorne in a modest garden shed (3m x 2m) back in 2015. Recognizing the need for more space to grow, Heath constructed a larger shed (10m x 5m) in 2017 to transition into furniture making full-time. Within two years, the his business had expanded beyond the confines of the home workshop, prompting a move to a 400m2 warehouse in Henley Beach in 2019. The journey from a backyard shed to a full-scale workshop with employees has been immensely challenging yet rewarding. Despite the difficulties, the experience of working independently and running a business remains unparalleled, though it comes with its set of challenges. In our conversation we talk about these challenges and the how his business has grown since we last spoke in 2021. WANT TO SUPPORT THIS PODCAST? The first of our Australian tour podcasts, and get this, this one wasn't event planned. Steph was the amazing potter that made the plates for our table at the great takeaway, an event put on by the creative city of Ballarat. From here we got talking and we Kate and I had the pleasure of sharing a table with her at the Mayoral dinner a few nights after we initially met. From there we agreed we would do a podcast before we set off from Ballarat and onto our Australian adventures. So here it is, a lot of fun, a lot of insight into the world of this amazing potter and founder of the Ballarat clay collective. A true community champion. Steph Wallace. Both Kate and I loved the energy Steph brought to this podcast, and bring to everyday life. She is a hoot to be around and as passionate about her craft as she is about enjoying it. Steph shares some insights into how she markets her work and how she has built a life of joy through her craft. WANT TO SUPPORT THIS PODCAST? We travelled to meet Rebecca and Craig of Struthers Watches in their workshop in Leek, England. We featured their story in Edition Two of our biannual publication; We Are Makers. It was great to catch up two years later to finally meet and have a more in-depth conversation about them and their journey. Recently Rebecca has written her own book. Written by Rebecca Struthers and illustrated by Craig, you can order her first book 'Hands of Time', A Watchmaker's History of Time. Hands of Time is an intricate and uniquely personal exploration of the history, science, philosophy, and craft of timekeeping. "When we were at uni, which is where we originally met, the two of us brought down the average age of the watchmaking course by about 40 years. One of the other students joked that time becomes more interesting the less of it that you have. It was like a retirement hobby as opposed to a career. But the watch industry has been growing massively in recent years. One school in Manchester started to teach basic manufacturing about 15 years ago, and we’re now seeing graduates from that course setting up their own workshops after an initial spell in industry. The industry is getting younger and it’s really promising to see." - Extract from Ed.2 We Are Makers Insta: @weare_makers Website: https://wearemakers.shop/ Struthers Interview was published in Edition Two of We Are Makers. We flew to Montegenvere, France to meet Andy Carr of Spoon Customs. This is the place it all started for him. "I ran away to France, initially thinking I’d just go for a couple of months and get some head space. But once I got there, I started driving a transfer bus for a friend’s company, and I would pass all these landmarks from some of the world’s top pro-cycling events. I had found myself pretty much by accident in the best cycling area in the world, just above a town called Montgenèvre. The Tour de France has started and finished a stage there, and the Giro came through my village. And if you roll down that mountain, you’re then on a road that stretches all the way to Venice, and everybody who’s anybody in bike manufacturing is along that road. It was great to be near all those craftspeople making the kind of bikes I wanted to build. So I just got my head down and got to work." We took at trip over to Knock which is located in the county of Banffshire, UK to meet Gordon Bruce at Knockdhu Distillery, home of anCnoc Whisky. "We make whisky. I manage a very small, very traditional distillery in North East Scotland. The emphasis is very much on having people take care of production rather than rely on technology and computers and modern-fangled things like that. The 21st century is overrated, grossly overrated. The distillery operates 24/7, with basically zero automation. We can only do that because of the guys we have here – it’s a team of five now. We started out on little lakes and canals and when he was aged six or seven, he said that he wanted to go with me on the trips I do. I thought it was perhaps not that safe for him to be in his own kayak, so we built a very rudimentary canoe back then. And then we built another canoe for a friend, and it just grew and grew.” We Are Makers Insta: @weare_makers Website: https://wearemakers.shop/ Bart Deseyn Insta: @freerangercanoe Website: www.freerangercanoe.com The discussions and opinions in the podcast are not necessarily the opinions of us (We Are Makers). We took at trip over to the Netherlands to meet Wilco Lindner in his home and to see his workshop and work. “I began making my functional art around two or three years back but couldn’t put all my time into it as I was still running a CrossFit gym then. Building things with my hands was giving me a really good feeling, so I quit the gym about a year ago to focus fully on this. I started working on the business full-time around June 2021. I’ve just kept hammering on ever since and it’s got me where I am today.” We Are Makers Insta: @weare_makers Website: https://wearemakers.shop/ Wilco Lindner Insta: @bywilcolindner Website: www.bywilcolindner.com Youtube: https://youtube.com/@ANineteenBuilt The discussions and opinions in the podcast are not necessarily the opinions of us (We Are Makers). We took at trip over to Belgium to the lovely town of Ghent to meet Winne in his workshop. "People would describe me as a musician and an instrument maker. Both of these things go hand in hand, with one getting the upper hand over the other at times. Sometimes I switch more to performing and doing scoring jobs, and at other times I focus more on the making of the instruments. For me, it’s very hard to find the right words for exactly what I do. I just follow my feelings and my intuition. I think I’m a sound sculptor as well, in a way, both when I make the instruments and when I play them." We took at trip over to Belgium to the lovely town of De Haan to meet Maximus in his workshop. "You will find me today in a small workshop in De Haan, a village on Belgium’s coastline, which is where I was born and raised. My surroundings are my source of inspiration: away from man-made noise, you can hear the waves landing on the beach, or you can find yourself in the heart of a forest. My name is Maximus, and I am a sculptor. The creation of wooden sculptures is the result of my many years of passion for wood. It started from a young age at school, where I learned the craft of general woodworking. Specialising in carpentry and furniture design, I wanted to elevate my potential with wood. After a year of historical furniture restoration and learning lathe work, I was eager to learn more about what was possible. Grateful to have such an amazing parent who supported my interest in wood, I sought and found my next big opportunity that would change my life and push my limits once more. I was accepted into Institut Saint-Luc Tournai, an art college in Tournai, Belgium." We took at trip to visit the lovely Zoe Wilson in her workshop in Houghton, Hampshire, England. "Continuing the tradition of skills passed from master to apprentice has shaped my career and is at the heart of my work. My stone carving is simple in its manufacture, using only a mallet and chisel, but born from a wealth of knowledge gleaned over the years from highly skilled craftspeople. I once read that craft is the “seemingly impossible skill of making something by hand. Perfectly.” This is precisely how I feel about carving. For me, craft is also about the personal relationship between the maker and the material. I feel a huge amount of respect for stone as a raw material and feel a responsibility to always strive to create pieces worthy of it. " - Extract from Edition four of We Are Makers - Zoe Wilson. We took a trip to meet Barney at Capreolus distillery at his childhood home where he works from today. "The Cotswolds have been a constant influence through my life. Growing up in this most idyllic region of England I was surrounded by flower rich grasslands, ancient woodlands scented with lily of the valley, historic orchards and the wildlife that inhabited them. A love of nature was a natural development and led to my former life as a photojournalist specialising in conservation stories - supplying non-profit media to over 118 countries – a perfect way to find, experience and capture these rare and precious moments. Finding fruit distilling came as a natural extension to this discipline." - Barney Wilczak We Are Makers Insta: @weare_makers Website: https://wearemakers.shop/ Capreolus Distillery Insta: @capreolusdistil Website: https://www.capreolusdistillery.co.uk/ The discussions and opinions in the podcast are not necessarily the opinions of us (We Are Makers). We took a trip to visit Ross in his store who owns Finnieston Clothing in Glasgow, Scotland. "At Finnieston Clothing, we offer functional lifestyle garments with a strong focus on quality and durability. Our home is Glasgow, a city whose shipbuilding yards were once revered the world over. Although all but a handful of yards are gone forever, the pride in the industry is still very much alive. We aim to utilise our collections in telling the story of the industrial workforces of Glasgow’s past. Our articles each carry names and features that pay tribute to our home city and its heritage. Our outerwear garments are designed with a nod to workwear from the heyday of the City’s River, the Clyde. We seek to revive the ‘Clydebuilt’ hallmark of excellence." We took a trip to visit Hollie Cooper who creates colourful, functional ceramics handmade in her workshop in Lancashire, UK, Jack and I had a long-form conversation about her work and what it's like to be a small business. "I first fell in love with ceramics when I was introduced to small batch production methods such as the traditional techniques of wheel-throwing, mold-making and slip-casting. After graduating in 2019, I set up my studio with the intention of offering pottery workshops alongside creating my pieces." We took a trip to visit Jamie and Lucy who run Banton Frameworks to have a long-form conversation about their business and what it's like to be a small business. They handmake spectacles and sunglasses frames from their workshop by Banton Loch, just outside Kilsyth, near Glasgow. Extract from Edition Three, We Are Makers. Why do what you do? "It stems from Lucy’s project. Behind every business there’s some degree of a problem being solved – in Lucy’s case, a dissatisfaction with what was available from her optician at the time. Naively, we thought that we could do it better. We can now, but it took us almost a decade to get here. The result is better and, to us, much more personal to the wearer than mass manufactured frames made in their thousands. Eyewear is almost like perfume or aftershave: apply the same perfume to 10 different people and it will smell 10 different ways. I think glasses are very much like that. Glasses are such a crucial implement – they help people see – but they are also a very personal and intimate item, as eyewear is a huge part of the wearer’s identity. Glasses are quite simple objects – figures of eight with sticks on either side – but when you wear that frame for up to 16 hours a day, it represents you. I think it’s important to have eyewear that is made well. I don’t see it as any different to having a tailored suit, a smart pair of brogues or a nice handbag. Frames can be very mass produced and almost loveless: you go into an optician and see rows on the wall and they’re basically just lens holders. Some manufacturers who we admire make very nice frames, but generally, mainstream optical brands lack the magic that we strive to produce. So why do we do it? We do it because eyewear is a balance of fashion, identity and medical aid. We think that’s a pretty important range of roles for a single item." - Jamie Bartlett This video podcast was filmed in Banton Frameworks workspace in Kilsyth, Glasgow. We took a trip to visit Stephen Cichocki at his workspace within the Sustainable Studios in Cardiff, Wales to have a long-form conversation about his business and what it's like to be a small business. Thank you also to Stephen's wife Lisa for cooking us dinner that night - it was a lovely end to our day! Stephen: “All my life I have been a maker, from using glue and matchsticks when I was a kid to carving stone for my degree in sculpture. I have always had a desire to make things with great value, that would be greatly appreciated and stand the test of time and would even one day become a family heirloom. Everything is so cheaply produced these days that it takes the value out of things Jewellery has always been produced to commemorate a moment; the reign of a new king or queen, coming of age, a marriage, anniversary or birthday, the piece is made to remember and to celebrate. That’s why I love getting to know my customers and hearing their stories, because you get to share their special moments with them and even be a little part of that."
