Episode Description: Jessica B. Harris may have been born and raised in New York City, but she has Tennessee roots through her father and has spent much of her life split between homes in the Northeast and the South – specifically New Orleans. For more than fifty years, she has been a college professor, a writer, and a lecturer, and her many books have earned her a reputation as an authority on food of the African Diaspora, as well as a lifetime achievement award from the James Beard Foundation. A few years back, Netflix adapted her book, High on the Hog: A Culinary Journey from Africa to America , into a 4 part docuseries. And I’m very proud to say that she’s a longtime contributor to Southern Living with a regular column called The Welcome Table. This episode was recorded in the Southern Living Birmingham studios, and Sid and Jessica talked about her mother’s signature mac and cheese, the cast-iron skillet she’d be sure to save if ever her house were on fire, and her dear friend, the late New Orleans chef Leah Chase. In this episode of The Rumors Are True podcast, we’re honored to host Father Jamey Bozeman , guitarist and songwriter for iconic bands including Luxury , Golf Slang , They Sang as They Slew , Champion Leader and Canary . Jamey opens up about his remarkable dual life—shifting between performing emotionally charged indie rock and serving as an Orthodox priest. We trace his musical journey from the early days of Luxury’s explosive debut on Tooth & Nail Records, through near-death experiences, lineup changes, and the spiritual transformation that led several members of the band toward the priesthood. We also dive into the story behind the acclaimed documentary Parallel Love: The Story of a Band Called Luxury , which chronicles the band's rise, struggles, and rebirth. Jamey reflects on how themes of faith, suffering, and transcendence are woven through his songwriting, and how each of his projects—whether it's the raw energy of They Sang as They Slew or the experimental textures of Golf Slang —captures a different piece of his creative spirit. This conversation explores deep waters: the role of beauty in belief, the tension between performance and humility, and how decades of friendship and music have shaped one man’s life in profound and surprising ways. A must-listen for anyone who believes music can be more than just sound—it can be sacred. In this episode of The Rumors Are True podcast, we’re joined by the members of Hot Pink Turtle—Jamin Rathbun, Dion Tyler, Dave Mora, and Jay Cleem—for a rare and engaging conversation about their time as one of the most offbeat and genre-defying bands on the R.E.X. Records roster. Known for blending elements of jazz, funk, alternative rock, and quirky experimentation, Hot Pink Turtle created music that was wildly ahead of its time and stood out in a scene largely dominated by heavier or more straightforward styles. The band reflects on their origins, the creative energy behind their only full-length release Ticklewigglejigglepickle , and how they balanced humor, musicianship, and message in a scene that often took itself seriously. They share stories from touring, the challenges of being so sonically different, and what each member has been up to since the band’s brief but impactful run. This episode offers deep insight, laughs, and a true appreciation for a band that embraced weirdness and carved a lasting cult following in the process.
