How much of your work is caring for what you really care about ? Marcos workshops an outline of his observations of how "Envelopes of Care"(EOCs) backed by “Universal Basic Guarantees” (UBGs) contour our world. Jim seeks context and explores connections to theories of value, change and evolution. Marcos questions: How do ecosystems generate and build? Do we need a better "theory of value", or more accurate stories of the social-work of "valu- ing "? If the value of money comes from taxation , imposing a burden can be a source of value, but not all burdens are the same. The burdens of parenting may lead to life. The burden of student-loan debt seems less constructive. What if we saw this as a design problem? Maybe then economists could talk about love, and help align labor and resources with purpose, so we could actually care for what we care about . Jim and Marcos talk through five Modern Money Theory (MMT) points from the film Finding the Money . Jim’s says watching the film brought him from being an “MMT skeptic” to being “open to these ideas” as a “helpful framework”. Marcos feels excited by the potential that democratic deployment of public money creates for public policy, but frightened by power it may give to authoritarian governments who understand it, especially if “We, the People” continue to believe that currency-issuers are the same as currency-users. Jim wonders if MMT can be combined with conventional econ when we talk about public spending. Jim observes that the revolutionary aspirations from some MMTers mirrors that from some advocates of cryptocurrency. Marcos has spent countless hours trying to comprehend MMT in the last few years. Filmmaker Maren Poitras’ achievement in Finding the Money offers a chance to grasp the basics within 95 minutes. But that’s just the start of a new conversation. In Re: Birth twenty-one poems trace the arc of two decades of life, from the youthful uncertainty of twenty to the midlife introspection of forty. This collection dives into the depths of the human condition, capturing moments of identity, struggle, despair, hope, growth, and decay. Each poem was originally written on the author's birthday and marks not just the passage of time but the evolution of the self. In the storm of life, we call out for an anchor, for rope to tie ourselves to the mast for fear of sirens. These poems represent a search for meaning within the maelstrom. Loser Gumbo (EP) from Marcos de la Guagua is a collage of idea-dense, cathartic Hiphop/Blues/Gospel in a sonorous soundscape. The title comes from staged rooster fights where one wins and "… some may get mercy, but I’ve seen that some go / into a pot of Loser Gumbo.” We're all the loser at some point. So can we talk about loss and losing? What can we learn from losing? Jim and Marcos listen to and discuss three songs from the EP. Please extend grace for Marcos’ audio issue in this conversation. He doesn’t really sound that much like a chipmunk.
