Pioneers of Country May 13, 2012 Happy Mother's Day! Mother's day 2012 was on a Sunday. We play a few “mother” songs throughout the show. We begin with Hank Williams followed by Leona Williams (no relationship that I know of). Dave mentions he is in the process of painting the garage of the broadcast studio. Then The Statler Brothers entertain us with “Whatever Happened to Randolph Scott”. A live version of Second Hand Rose by Roy Drusky is next. Nashville Cats showcases stories and songs from musicians and session singers who have played important roles in country music history. It is from 1966 and is performed by The Lovin' Spoonful. Eddy Arnold with a “mother” song. Then“Send a Picture of Mother” by Johnny Cash. A novelty song, or perhaps a name dropper song is next, Country Music Nightmare by Boxcar Willie. The Keys in the Mailbox by Buck Owens was written by Harlan Howard is up next. Charlie Pride sings a Hank Williams song. “Honky Tonk Blues" was a big hit for Charlie Pride also. That's the first 30 minutes. We begin the second half hour with Canadian Country Music Entertainer, Ladd Dunham with a cut from his “Memories” CD. There's 48 minutes to go on this abbreviated broadcast. They were forgotten by The Country Music Industry, Country Radio, and even The Grand Ole Opry – Pioneers of Country proudly remember those artists, and the music they made popular. Special Note: Most of the E-Mail, chat room, and web sites mentioned no longer exist. Your best bet to keep in contact with Pioneers Of Country is on Pod-O-Matic or on our Facebook Page. Cybershortwave May 14, 2000 (Mother's Day) From 25 years ago. This was prior to our country music format. However there's no shortage of pioneers of country music.
Pioneers of Country May 11, 2013 Pioneers of Country remembers Stompin’ Tom Connors. Thomas Charles “Stompin' Tom” Connors, OC (February 9, 1936 – March 6, 2013) was one of Canada's most prolific and well-known country and folk singer-songwriters. Focusing his career exclusively on his native Canada, Connors is credited with writing more than 300 songs and has released four dozen albums, with total sales of nearly 4 million copies. Connors died at age 77 in his home in Ballinafad, Ontario on March 6, 2013 of renal failure. They were forgotten by The Country Music Industry, Country Radio, and even The Grand Ole Opry – Pioneers of Country proudly remember those artists, and the music they made popular. The Merle Haggard Story (Pt 14) Pioneers of Country welcomes you to “The Merle Haggard Story” - a syndicated program originally broadcast in early 1985, including many interviews. PLAYLIST: Yesterday's Wine Going Where the Lonely Go Merle Haggard passed away on April 6, 2016. Not long after Live 365 went out of business, so we never got to do a proper tribute broadcast. That is until now. During the COVID Pandemic of 2020 and 2021, I got the chance to travel to a place close to home – my attic! Up there I found a treasure trove of recordings that I had forgotten about. Among them was this several part syndicated broadcast titled “The Merle Haggard Story”. I thought it would be a great tribute to “The Hag” if we rebroadcast this part of Merle's beginnings, and continuing to his mid career popularity.…
Pioneers of Country April 8, 2012 Easter Sunday was on April 8, 2012. We begin with Kitty Wells and "It Wasn't God Who Made Honky Tonk Angels". Lester Flatt and Earl Scruggs up next with "The Ballad of Jed Clampett" followed by Tennessee Ernie Ford loading 16 tons. Dave talks next about his Grandsons visiting for Easter which they celebrated on Saturday. The Judds sings “Grandpa, Tell Me About The Good old Days”. String Bean (AKA: David Akeman) is next then Cal Smith - The Lord Knows I'm Drinking. We get a request next from Mark in Scotland who likes Johnny Russell. After the song, Dave tells the story of when we went to The Grand Ole Opry and when Susan got to shake Johnny Russell's hand (The picture you see is the original that Susan took of Johnny at that moment). And that's just the first 30 minutes – there is still 2 hours to to go with more fun. A special note: At 1hr 45 minutes into the show, Dave plays a song by Governor Jimmie Davis and, Dave incorrectly states that he was the Governor of Tennessee. Later, a loyal listener Tom Steiner corrects Dave that Jimmie Davis was the Governor of Louisiana who served from May 9, 1944 – May 11, 1948. An even more egregious mistake is when Dave states he was a Republican! NO! Governor Jimmie Davis was a Democrat! Well, we sure try, and it's always fun doing live shows. They were forgotten by The Country Music Industry, Country Radio, and even The Grand Ole Opry – Pioneers of Country proudly remember those artists, and the music they made popular. Pioneers of Country April 1, 2012 April Fools Day, and Dave suspects “tricks” will be played on our broadcast. We shall see. Next is "Forever and Ever, Amen" a song written by Paul Overstreet and Don Schlitz, and recorded by American country music artist Randy Travis. It was released in March 1987 as the first single from the album Always & Forever and became Travis's third No. 1 single on the U.S. Billboard Hot Country Singles charts. Dave states that Randy Travis should be in the Country Music Hall of Fame. That happened in 2016. Dave gives some disturbing news on Randy's troubles during this time. Wilma Lee Leary (February 7, 1921 – September 13, 2011), known professionally as Wilma Lee Cooper, was an American bluegrass-based country music entertainer. The Nitty Gritty Dirt Band is an American country-folk-rock band that has existed in various forms since its founding in Long Beach, California in 1966. The group's membership has had at least a dozen changes over the years, including a period from 1976 to 1981 when the band performed and recorded as The Dirt Band. Constant members since the early times are singer-guitarist Jeff Hanna and drummer Jimmie Fadden. Multi-instrumentalist John McEuen was with the band from 1966 to 1986 and returned during 2001. Keyboardist Bob Carpenter joined the band in 1977. The band is often cited as instrumental to the progression of contemporary country and roots music. That's the first 20 minutes of our broadcast. There's over an hour more to go. Please enjoy! They were forgotten by The Country Music Industry, Country Radio, and even The Grand Ole Opry – Pioneers of Country proudly remember those artists, and the music they made popular. Pioneers of Country March 28, 2015 We begin with a song by Hank Lockin written by Karl Davis. Released September 1967 from the album 'Country Hall of Fame', it reached #8. This is the time of year when The Hall of Fame releases their newest inductees. So Dave dedicates the program to the 2015 inductees. (1) Thomas Grady Martin (January 17, 1929 – December 3, 2001) was an American session guitarist in country music and rockabilly. (2) Jim Ed Brown and The Browns are next. (3) Then The Oak Ridge Boys. Dave plays the song we began with, Hank Lockin and The Country Hall of Fame. To be followed by Tex Ritter and Hillbilly Heaven. They were forgotten by The Country Music Industry, Country Radio, and even The Grand Ole Opry – Pioneers of Country proudly remember those artists, and the music they made popular. Pioneers of Country March 6, 2011 Porter and Dolly start things off with “Put it off until Tomorrow” followed by a Jumpin' Bill Carlisle song. This is just the beginning of a 3 hour broadcast where we expanded our regular playlist to some new comers. Ned Miller is next, From a Jack to a King. Next song is by Rex Allen Sr. "Don't Go Near The Indians" is a very complicated song and very taboo for 1962 when it was released. The song is a tale of a young man who disobeys his father's advice stated in the title. When the father finds out that he had developed a relationship with a beautiful Indian maiden (named Nova Lee), he decides to reveal to his son what he had kept secret for so long: The man's biological son was killed by an Indian (as stated in the lyrics) during a clash between the white man and a tribe, and in retaliation, he kidnapped the boy as a young baby and raised him as his son. The other secret: His son cannot marry Nova Lee because she's the boy's biological sister. Dave gives some disturbing details of Rex Allen's death in 1999. Johnny Cash, Marty Robbins, and Waylon and Willie follow. All the Big Guns, too many to name are included in this memorable broadcast. During the second hour, Dave plays a song by the offspring of country music royalty. George Jones and Tammy Wynette's only daughter together, Georgette Jones. Georgette shines by doing a spot-on version of her mama's version of I Don't Wanna Play House. Reba is inducted into The Country Music Hall of Fame this year. This was a true country music broadcast. I hope you enjoy it as much as I did back in 2011. Special Note: Most of the E-Mail, chat room, and web sites mentioned no longer exist. Golden Age OTR March 12, 2006 This was our second to last broadcast before we decided to retire from regular internet broadcasts in the spring of 2006. Dave explained that this broadcast is dedicated to his favorite music, Dave's Fav's! We begin with The Andrews Sisters - Rum & Coca Cola. Next is one of the newest members of the Country Music Hall of Fame, Carl Smith and “Back Up Buddy” (even back then, we always found a place for Real Country Music). There's plenty of Country Music to come during the remainder of the broadcast, so stay tuned. Judy Garland - Somewhere Over the Rainbow is next. There was an ongoing skit during the last few weeks before Dave retired. It was called “Kid Kirby Rides Again” (Taken from an old time radio drama, The Lone Ranger). So today Dave plays outtakes and deleted segments prior to our last broadcast in two weeks. Song of The Sewer, Lyrics and music by Art Carney is next. (Up A) Lazy River Lyrics by The Mills Brothers from the “The Star Dust Man” album is next. Dave gives a rundown of his old time radio programming during the week on Live365. That's the first 30 minutes, there's 90 more minutes of fun and frivolity to follow.
