The latest Quantum Tech Pod with Julien Camirand Lemyre, CEO and Co-founder, Nord Quantique is live! Julian was born in a small town in Quebec called Sutton – a very beautiful environment where he got to a lot of stuff like skiing! He has a PhD in Experimental quantum computation from the University of Sherbrooke and conducted research on fabricating devices for improved quantum computing performance. Julian and his co-founder, Philippe St-Jean, met through their mutual interest in quantum computing and started Nord Quantique in 2020. The key differentiator of Nord Quantique's technology is their approach to quantum error correction using bosonic codes. They use superconducting circuits and leverage the intrinsic redundancy of photon states to create error-corrected qubits. This bosonic code approach allows them to correct errors at the individual qubit level, without needing many physical replicas of qubits. Nord Quantique is currently working with OTI Lumionics, a company that develops LEDs, to test new quantum computing applications for materials science. Julien believes that in 10 years we'll reach a point where fault tolerant quantum computers are sufficiently powerful to be used within an increasingly larger subset of industry processes. My latest Quantum Tech Pod with Sabrina Maniscalco – CEO and co-founder, Algorithmiq, is live! Sabrina grew up in a small town called Mazzara, in southwestern Sicily, facing Africa. Two years before she went to university, she got a telescope as a birthday present and started to observe the stars and read about how galaxies are formed. This is what started her passion for quantum physics! Sabrina has held research and post-doctoral positions in many places around the world including South Africa, Bulgaria, Vienna, Germany, and eventually Finland. She co-founded Algorithmic in 2020 while a professor of quantum information, computing and logic at the University of Helsinki– where she still teaches. Algorithmic is developing advanced quantum algorithms that run on near-term quantum devices to enable the discovery of new drugs and the development of new materials. Working with IBM Quantum and the Cleveland Clinic, they are creating a hybrid quantum and classical solution to help choose and optimize the properties of photosensitizers used in photodynamic therapy for curing cancer. A patient is administered a photosynthesizing drug which is not in an active form. Once absorbed by the cells, it is then activated locally by light irradiation. Worth noting that the World Economic Forum recently announced the selection of Algorithmic as one of this year's 100 companies that will be joining its technology pioneers initiative. My latest Quantum Tech Pod with Andrei Dragomir – Co-Founder and CEO of quantum company Aquark Technologies is live! Andrei grew up in Romania in a house with a scientific focus: his mother is a professor of physics, and his father is an engineer. He remembers as a kid going to his mom's lab after school, where his toys of choice were the devices lying around—the optics, the lasers, the electronics. He moved to the UK to study, and for the first two-thirds of his PhD at the University of Southampton, he focused on microfabrication and vacuum science rather than quantum physics. Aquark Technologies was spun out of the University of Southampton in 2021 to develop the world’s smallest plug-and-play cold atom quantum device. Andrei and I discussed recent developments in cold atom technology, including the invention of “super molasses,” which simplifies miniaturizing and mainstreaming this technology. One application is a “gravity camera,” which can scan large areas simultaneously and monitor long-term gravity signatures. My latest Quantum Tech Pod with Peter Chapman, President and CEO, of leading quantum computing company, IonQ, is live! Peter had an atypical childhood. He grew up near the Johnson Space Center in Houston because his father was an astronaut who used to fly over the house in his trainer jet. In high school, Peter went to study with the well-known cognitive scientist Marvin Minsky at the AI lab at MIT because he wasn’t being challenged enough in school. He said that IonQ chose ions as qubits because they are all the same and perfectly identical. But he also said they may not be the modality of choice in 50 years – new approaches may emerge. We discussed the new facility IonQ just opened outside Seattle to provide additional cloud access to clients and more room for their engineering team. Peter also feels that at some point, we may not be able to put more qubits on a single chip, which might mean a quantum solution that uses multiple chips networked together, kind of the way we do blade servers in supercomputers today. My latest Quantum Tech Pod episode with Kurt Stokbro, CEO of quantum company Sparrow Quantum is live! Sparrow Quantum is a quantum photonics company based in Copenhagen, founded in 2016 by Professor Peter Lodahl. It is widely recognized as a leader in single photon sources, achieving the world's highest light matter coupling efficiency. Kurt is the CEO and is also a major investor in Sparrow Quantum. Kurt grew up in a small town in Denmark and studied quantum mechanics at the Niels Bohr Institute, attending advanced quantum mechanics lectures given by Aage Bohr, one of Niels Bohr’s sons! Sparrow Quantum’s flagship product is a deterministic single photon source, a superior alternative to probabilistic quantum emitters. When the photon is excited in the quantum dots, it only has one path to follow. Every time you trigger it, it will emit one photon, resulting in billions of indistinguishable photons per second. To do the same with probabilistic approaches would require millions of emitters. Sparrow Quantum is a component provider and works with various partners. My latest Quantum Tech Pod with Grégoire Ribordy, CEO of ID Quantique (IDQ)is live! Gregoire went to EPFL (Écolepolytechnique fédérale de Lausanne) - the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology - where he studied physics. After working for a year in Japan at Nikon, the camera company, he returned to Switzerland in the mid-90s. Interesting back story: Just before 2000, one of the very first quantum companies called Magic Technologies, founded in Boston, was going around the world trying to license QKD for quantum cryptography. They came to Geneva and offered to partner with Grégoire and his team. But he said to his colleagues, “Why don’t we just do it on our own? Why would we do it with a company far away when we could do it here and control our own destiny?” So they founded ID Quantique (IDQ) in 2001. The first application, which surprised him, was online gambling. In the early 2000s, many casino games like poker were moving online and they needed a source of entropy. It was a market that IDQ found by chance. Today, IDQ prepares organizations for a quantum-safe future by providing quantum key distribution, Quantum-Safe Key management solutions, quantum random number generators, and single photon counters. IDQ recently signed an agreement with Singtel to develop Singapore’s first Nationwide Quantum-Safe Network Plus (NQSN+) for enterprises. Check out my conversation with Grégoire!
