In this episode, we discuss... The Montreal Canadiens did not get Jordan Kyrou, but they did acquire winger Zachary Bolduc from the St Louis Blues, in exchange for right-hand defenseman Logan Mailloux Bolduc and Mailloux were both drafted in the 1st round of the 2021 NHL draft. Bolduc was selected 17th by the St Louis Blues, and Mailloux 31st by the Habs. Was this a good trade for the Canadiens? Currently, the Habs are over the cap by almost $3 million. They have a lot of depth on defense. Especially, on the left side. With Lane Hutson, Kaiden Guhle, Noah Dobson, and Arber Xhekaj, could Kent Hughes look to trade Mike Matheson? or should he take a more cautious approach and keep him until they are certain that Reinbacher can start the season with the Habs (Yes, we know Reinbacher is RD, check out the episode)? Joel Armia and Christian Dvorak are gone. They have signed with LA and Philly. Will the Canadiens miss them? Especially on the PK or in some defensive situations? There are rumors circulating that Mason McTavish is not overly happy with his situation in Anaheim and that he could be available. Should the Canadiens submit an offer sheet for Mason McTavish? Should they trade for him? Wouldn't he be the perfect 2C (short and long term)? PLEASE NOTE: THIS EPISODE WAS RECORDED DURING THE 1st ROUND OF THE 2025 NHL DRAFT In this episode, we discuss... The Montreal Canadiens acquired 25-year-old right-hand defenseman Noah Dobson in exchange for Emil Heineman, and two 1st round picks (16 & 17) in the 2025 NHL Draft In addition, the Habs have signed Dobson to 8-years $9.5 million dollars, making him the highest paid Hab since Carey Price (10.5). Our thoughts on the trade, what Dobson does for the team, and where he fits in the lineup. Does Kent Hughes have any other trades up his sleeve? They have been linked to Jordan Kyrou and have been rumored to want to shed some salary. What are they going to do with Matheson? He doesn't really have a spot anymore and has fallen down the depth chart. In this episode, we discuss... While the Stanley Cup finals is going, the Habs are in offseason mode, and we all know how crazy the offseason rumor mill can be. So, it's only natural for us to talk about the latest NHL Trade Rumors. Especially, the ones that are linked to the Montreal Canadiens Nicolas Hague to the Canadiens? But why? Where's the fit? Is Sam Bennett the ideal 2C for the Montreal Canadiens? Are the New York Islanders and the Montreal Canadiens perfect trade partners. The NYI won the lottery draft and are getting the 1st overall pick in the upcoming draft. Some have speculated whether this could kickstart a full rebuild for the Islanders. In this episode, we discuss... The Canadiens’ 2024–25 season came to a close with a Game 5 playoff loss to the Washington Capitals. Now that the dust has settled, we’re looking back at the moments that defined the Habs’ rollercoaster season — the highs, the lows, and everything in between. What could be next and what we hope to see the management do this offseason. In this episode, we discuss... Regular season Josh Anderson VS Playoff Josh Anderson When was the last time both teams in the same game, of the same playoff series, lost their number 1 goalies?! Samuel Montembeault and Logan Thompson were both hurt in game 3 and left the game. Currently, there is not update on their status for game 4. We might be seeing a Dobes VS Lindgren battle. Which of the two give their team the edge in goal? Arber Xhekaj returned to the Habs lineup and added a physical presence. Some (NOT US) have even suggested that he is one of, if not the reason the Habs played the way that they did and won game 3. How much of an effect did Xhekaj's presence have on the team? In this episode, we discuss... Arber Xhekaj has been a healthy scratch for the last few games. Is it deserved? Has MSL lost trust in him? Is he still in the mid to long term plans? OR is MSL simply "riding the hot hand"? Samuel Montembeault is the uncontested number 1 goalie for the Montreal Canadiens. He is playing well enough, but you can see the fatigue setting in. The tough call is sitting him for a game in the middle of a playoff chase. If and when the Habs get into the playoffs, the concern is that he will be out of "gas". Should MSL start playing Dobes a LITTLE more (at a pace of 1 game for every 3) Oliver Kapanen has joined the Habs. Should they insert him in the lineup ASAP. If so, where? Habs sign Jacob Fowler to a 1-year (one-way) contract for the remainder of the Laval Rocket's 2024-25 season and a 3-year entry-level contract with the Montreal Canadiens, which will start next year (2025-26). WELCOME LUCA TO THE TEAM!!! In this episode, we discuss... At the time of this recording, the Habs playoff hopes are still alive. The Habs have lost the last couple of games, but the teams behind them have not seized the opportunity to overtake the Habs for the last wildcard spot. With that being said, the Habs have to turn it around quickly or their playoff hopes will dwindle down. Betting sites have the habs playoff percentage at around 48%. Will the Habs make the playoffs? Are they running out of gas? Juraj Slafkovsky is starting to get a reputation of being a 2nd half guy. Since the 4 nations tournament, Slaf is playing at over a point per game pace. Is he a 2nd half guy or is he simply a different player since the 4 Nations? In the offseason, either through trade or in the UFA market, who should the Habs go after to fill the 2C spot? Luca brings up an interesting name, but it might be a costly acquisition. It's time to STOP questioning if Suzuki is a number 1 center. He definitely is. He is not a 100-pts center, but so what!? There have been many number 1 centers in the NHL who have never hit 100 pts (e.g. Bergeron, Datsyuk, etc). Suzuki has 6 penalty minutes, is playing around a PPG pace, and has really put the team on his back. Some have suggested that he could be nominated for the Selke. Is Suzuki a legit Selke candidate? In this episode, we discuss... RECORDED BEFORE THE GAME VS THE KRAKKEN Habs had a quiet Trade Deadline and it's not necessarily a bad thing. While it wasn't an eventful trade deadline for the Habs, it sent a clear message that the Habs are slowly coming out of this rebuild. They did not sacrifice any key pieces and assets to acquire rentals, and they seem to feel comfortable with the assets and picks they have. Patrik Laine was feeling under the weather with flu-like symptoms. Once again this did not stop the rumors from going around about it. It seems that it doesn't matter what team he is on, there is a negative perception about him that is not going away. The latest RUMORS suggest that he and MSL are at odds with one another, or that he is having late nights gaming, or that he has no love for the sport anymore. At this point, the only way he can get away from these rumors is to show up, be committed, and play to his fullest potential. Lane Hutson is a superstar already. You can disagree or attack us if you want, but he is in the top 7 in scoring among all defensemen in the NHL, AS A ROOKIE (tied for 4th). How soon should the Habs sign him to his next contract? In this episode, we discuss... A local radio station (not naming who) brought up the rumor that Dobson may be available for the right price. They mused over the idea of Dobson being traded to the Montreal Canadiens. During their segment they mentioned that to get Dobson, the Habs would likely have to send Caufield the other way. Would we trade Cole Caufield for Noah Dobson? Since the 4 Nations tournament, the Habs have played two games (Ottawa and Carolina) and won both games. Slafkovsky has scored in both games and has been a beast. Before the season resumed, he stated "to have success in the NHL, you have to play like Brady Tkachuk." In the first game after making that statement, VS Ottawa, he scored a goal, got into a fight, was the first star of the game, and finished the game with 8 hits. He is definitely more engaged. Has he found his game? Is this the version of Slaf we will see more often than not? There are some rumors circulating around Rantanen and Carolina. Apparently, during the 4 Nations tournament, the Carolina Hurricanes submitted an offer to Rantanen. He has yet to sign and has let Carolina know that he still needs time. The latest rumors/speculation going around is that Carolina may consider flipping Rantanen again by the NHL Trade Deadline. Assuming he makes it to Free Agency, should the Habs open their wallet and/or give him a blank check? Would we sign Rantanen to 13+ million dollars? Demidov should be signing his entry-level contract when his season with SKA is done. All analysts, scouts, podcasters, members of media, etc. are all saying that Demidov could be the Habs next 100 pts player. He has all the skill and talent to be the first 100 pts player since Mats Naslund. If he hits his ceiling, and scores 100 pts, at the end of his ELC, would you give him the contract that 100 pts player would typically get? We play the game "Hab for a Minute". In this episode, we discuss... A couple of games ago, Martin St. Louis benched Patrik Laine and Kirby Dach. Was benching them a smart move? Will this affect Laine in a negative way, or will he understand the message? Kevin Weekes posted a tweet that there is some interest across the NHL for Buffalo Sabres' center Dylan Cozens and apparently, the Habs are one of the teams interested in Dylan Cozens. Should the Habs trade for him? What should they trade to acquire him (if they do)? Don't they have a similar project in Kirby Dach? Apparently, New Jersey is really interested in Jake Evans. Some have even tried linking Simon Nemec (Which is crazy to us) to the Habs in some kind of deal that involves Jake Evans. Evans is a proven commodity, and you know what you're getting with him. In this episode, we discuss... The NHL and the Montreal Canadiens released their quarter century teams. We give our thoughts and opinions on teams 1 and 2. Should there be any changes or other players to consider? Some have suggested that Subban should be on team 1 and Weber on team 2. Do we agree? Jakub Dobes has played 5 games and won all 5 games. He looks cool, calm, and collected. Montembeault has had some good games and struggled in others. He is still the Habs number 1 goalie (for now), but with Dobes playing the way that he has, do the Habs have a goalie controversy, or do they simply have a goalie tandem that MSL can finally rely on? The bottom 6 lines look very different without Emil Heineman and with Pezzetta. Thankfully Heineman is ok from an unexpected accident and that his injury is not long term. Since his injury was announced the bottom 6 has not looked the same. We discuss how underrated Emil Heineman is and his impact to the Habs roster. In this episode, we discuss... Alex Carrier has made a significant impact to the Montreal Canadiens. This underrated and under the radar acquisition has paid immediate dividends and gives the Canadiens a lot of flexibility with David Savard and how they approach the NHL Trade Deadline. Can and will this acquisition go down as one of HuGo's best? At the start of the season, many fans (including us) were saying that the Habs needed veteran players, needed to stabilize the defense, needed a right-hand shot defenseman, quarterback defenseman, needed a top 6 player, etc. They addressed many of those needs with Laine (return from injury), Lane Hutson and Will Carrier. What is the next immediate need or upgrade? Looking at the present and a little bit into the future, do the Habs have any superstar players? What does the word superstar mean to you? Currently, Laine is playing at a 52-goal pace. He is definitely an impact player and if he stays healthy, he can still reach that POTENTIAL to be a superstar in the NHL. You can see that because of his name, style of play, and shot, that players keep a keen eye on him during the game. He has one year left beyond this season and will likely cost a "pretty penny." Do we think that he will be a member of the Habs beyond next season? Will he and can he still be a superstar? Is Patrik Laine a long-term hab? In this episode, we discuss... The Montreal Canadiens have been on fire lately. They have won 4 of their last 5 games. All four wins were against the last 4 Stanley cup winners. These were games that most people and analysts expected them to lose. Currently, they are one point away from the final wild card spot and are officially in the mix. For those hoping for a top 5 pick in the upcoming draft this recent surge spells disaster. For those that were hoping that the Habs would take a step forward this season, are excited and eyeing that last playoff spot. Juraj Slafkovsky is still putting up points, but the eye test has not matched the production. Some Habs fans are really starting to lose their patience with him. Some seem to forget how young Slafkovsky and that he is actually younger than Lane Hutson (by 1 month). At only the age of 20 years old, is it fair to get on Slafkovsky's case? Has he undeservingly become the new whipping boy? Habs goaltender Jakub Dobes is making history. In a very small sample size, he has looked incredible. Currently, he is 2-0, has allowed only 1 goal in both of those games VS two of the best teams in the NHL. While it has only been 2 games, should the Montreal Canadiens continue to search for a veteran goalie? Or perhaps Monty is now the veteran goalie? In this episode, we discuss... The Montreal Canadiens traded Justin Barron to the Nashville Predators for veteran defenseman Alexandre Carrier. Carrier has already played 2 games with the Habs and you can already see his impact. We give our thoughts on the trade, Carrier, and Justin Barron's time with the Habs. Jake Evans has been on fire lately. As it stands right now, Evans is 4th on the team in scoring. It's a contract year for Evans. Should the Habs re-sign him or trade him? If the Habs were to re-sign him, what would a contract look like? Sam Montembeault played in back-to-back games. Nowadays it is very rare for a goalie to play both games in a back-to-back. Clearly, MSL and the coaching staff have lost confidence and Cayden Primeau (rightfully so). What's next for Primeau? Patrik Laine has scored 8 goals in his first 9 games with the Montreal Canadiens. All 8 goals came on the powerplay and since coming back from his injury the Habs powerplay looks completely different. In this episode, we discuss... Whether the Habs are really in the mix or not. Laine has not looked out of place and did not waste any time by scoring a pair of goals, but even with Laine in the lineup, are the Habs still a lottery team or an in "the mix" team. There has been a lot of attention on Head Coach Martin St. Louis. Some people questioning his decisions (or indecisions). Do we still believe that he is the guy to continue developing this young Habs team? What to do with Dach and Slafkovsky? The Habs have played about 30% of their games for the 2024-25 season. At this point, should we hope that they finish bottom 5 or push hard for a wild card spot? We discuss all that and more. Question(s) of the week : Barring any possibility of a trade, what would you do with Kirby Dach? What would you do to get him going? In this episode, we discuss... Why is Lane Hutson not playing on the 1st powerplay line? He has proven that he can handle the minutes. He creates high danger chances, has the mobility and the hockey IQ. We try to explain the reasons why Martin St. Louis has not played him on the 1st PP on a consistent basis. Jake Evans has been playing great this season, should the Habs re-sign him or trade him at the trade deadline? If they were to sign him, what would a contract look like for him? From the following scenarios, if we can only pick one, which would we pick? Cole Caufield scoring 40 goals OR Nick Suzuki posting 90 pts, OR Lane Hutson winning the Calder Some fans are still bringing up the Habs passing on Michkov for Reinbacher. Is it still too early and unfair to call it a bust pick or a mistake by the Habs? This is our 100th episode and sadly our beloved Montreal Canadiens are not putting us in a celebratory mood. With that being said, we want to thank our subscribers, friends, family members, and everyone who has been with us from the start. For those of you just joining, thank you and welcome to the channel. In this episode, we discuss... about the current struggles the Canadiens are going through and discuss some of the causes as well as what the number 1 problem the team has currently. The players are not showing up, some of the coaching decisions have been questionable, and the confidence seems to be at an all-time low. The question is, are we currently witnessing the Habs lowest point of this season? Can it even get any lower? They can only go up from here, RIGHT?! In this episode ( RECORDED BEFORE GAME VS ST-LOUIS ), we discuss... The Montreal Canadiens defensive woes and the rumor that Kent Hughes is making call for a top 4 right-handed defenseman. Also, we discuss Martin St. Louis' press conference and what he said about Arber Xhekaj. Kirby Dach is definitely rusty and not playing to his potential, but at the moment, there are some other concerns about his game. Is it time to be worried about him as a 2nd line center? In this episode, we discuss... Our thoughts and feelings of the Canadiens start to the season. Any noteworthy moments? Should we start being concerned about Cayden Primeau at the NHL level? While he hasn't had many starts yet, he has yet to seize his opportunities and show that he belongs at the NHL level. He has good moments, but he seems to struggle with consistency as the games go on. Everyone is talking about Lane Hutson. Right now, does he deserve the praise and "flowers" he is getting? Or is it too much, too soon? We play a little game where Matt asks us to pick one or the other. For this game, Matt asks Vito and Dave to pick one from the following list: PK Subban OR Lane Hutson Saku Koivu OR Nick Suzuki Juraj Slafkovsky OR Alex Kovalev Patrick Roy OR Carey Price Randy Cunneyworth OR Domenic Ducharme We invite you to play the game with us. In this episode, we discuss... The Montreal Canadiens pre-season is FINALLY over. Were there any standouts? Who did well, surprised us the most, and should they make the team. Arber Xhekaj had a very interesting pre-season. He was physical, took a lot of penalty minutes, defended his teammates, and was the "sheriff" the whole time. The question is, has the aspects of his game evolved enough to cement his position on the bottom pairing, over Jayden Struble? Well, the Habs powerplay continued where it left off last season. It's been terrible. Are we going to see more of the same or is it just that Martin St. Louis has not had enough time to work on the powerplay? In this episode, we discuss... Patrik Laine had to be helped off the ice following a knee on knee hit with Maple Leafs player Cedric Paré. The hit did not look good and neither does the injury. Sadly, Laine has not yet played a regular season game with the Montreal Canadiens, and it looks like he could be out for a while. We're hoping for the best, but it did not look good. To make matters worse, former 5th overall pick David Reinbacher also went down with an apparent knee injury. Let's just say that we and our fellow Habs fans are very discouraged right now. We're hoping for the best but it does not look good. Both players were seen leaving the Bell Centre with a knee brace and on crutches. The question everyone is asking is whether the hit was dirty or not. Should the NHL re-visit the pre-season format/rules? Are there too many pre-season games being played? Xhekaj took matters into his own hands and decided to stick up for his teammate by going after Paré. Many agree and believe that Paré had to expect someone (Xhekaj) to force him to defend himself after injuring a key player on the Montreal Canadiens roster. However, some do not agree with how Xhekaj went about it and are comparing it to the Moore/Bertuzzi situation. Which was one of the worst gestures and injuries to have ever happened in the NHL. Do we think that Xhekaj did the right thing? Was what he did as bad as some (very few) people say it was? In this episode, we discuss... The Habs bottom 6, where does it rank in the NHL? Assuming everyone is healthy, and that everyone plays their role and to their strengths, do the Habs have one of the best bottom 6 lines in the entire NHL? Lane Hutson is making it easier and easier for Habs management to keep him up at the NHL level and insert him into the main defensive lineup. With his style of play, potential and offensive skills, could he finish the season as a contender for the Calder? What is the criteria a defenseman must hit to be a nominee or even win the Calder? In this episode, we discuss... So far, Lane Hutson has been a standout in every game that he has played for the Montreal Canadiens. Whether it was the 2 games VS Detroit or the prospects games, everyone notices when he is on the ice. His edge work and IQ are off the charts good. His skating and mobility is very Quinn Hughes like. Will he make mistakes in his very young career, absolutely, but the pros definitely outweigh the cons with him. The question is, is he ready for a full 82 games at the NHL level? At the annual Montreal Canadiens golf tournament, Martin St. Louis confirmed that the Habs will not bring in a replacement for Alex Burrows and that MSL will run the powerplay. Will it be more of the same or something completely different? Vegas odd have been released and have the Montreal Canadiens finishing the season with 76 pts. The exact number they finished with last season. They're wrong! Right? Well, we give our thoughts on it and provide the over and under. In this episode, we discuss... On August 19, 2024, the Montreal Canadiens acquired forward Patrik Laine and 2026 2nd round pick for defenseman Jordan Harris. Patrik Laine is a 26-year-old big sized winger (6'5") and was drafted 2nd overall in the 2016 NHL draft. He has scored 30+ goals twice and 40+ goals once. He has the ability to be a top line impact forward. When he is focused and engaged, he can change the course of game. He has one of the heaviest shots in the entire NHL and his release is up there with some of the best. He has posted 117 pts in his last 129 games and has a career goal per game average of ~35 goals. From a health perspective, his last few seasons have been a little rough. However, his points production has been very solid on a very bad team, while going through some personal issues. Jordan Harris was a true professional and by all accounts, a very good person. However, there wasn't any place for him on the Montreal Canadiens roster. We wish him the best of luck. We have spoken about Laine to the Habs for quite some time now. Admittedly, when the rumors first surfaced up, we did not hate the idea of Laine with the Habs, but we had our reservations and concerns. As time went on, and as we got into the dead part of the offseason, we started to really see the benefits of taking a chance on a player like Laine. You can refer to Episodes 87 and 92 to hear our thoughts on the Laine to the Habs Rumors. Fast forward to today, the trade happened. Laine is a Hab. Is it a good thing? tune in to find out what we think. Question(s) of the week: Are you happy the Habs acquired Laine? The Montreal Canadiens signed 3 of their RFAs to new contracts. Arber Xhekaj signed for 2 years at a $1.3 million AAV, Justin Barron 2 years at a $1.15 million AAV, and Kaiden Guhle 6 years at a $5.55 million AAV. We give our thoughts on the contracts and what this could mean for the Canadiens going forward. Matt thinks that Guhle getting a 6-year contract instead of 8 is interesting. Tune in to find out why. There have been a lot of rumors swirling around social media about Patrick Laine and the Montreal Canadiens. We have spoken about Laine and the Montreal Canadiens in the past (episode 87). Has our opinion on Laine changed since then, do we think that Laine for the next 2 years would be a good fit for the Montreal Canadiens. In this episode, we discuss... We welcome Gregory Hamel (SonderNHL) as the newest member of the Get PuckD Podcast. NHL.com released their projected lineup for the Montreal Canadiens. After analyzing the lineup, we feel that the way they made the lineup feels very lazy. Almost as though they put no real thought into it. Out of Hutson, Reinbacher and Mailloux, who is most likely to make the team out of camp? Of the players mentioned, when looking at their overall talent and skillset, who is our favorite player? On another podcast, Michael Pezzetta spoke about the tax situation in Montreal. Basically, he said the "quiet" part out loud. Should the NHL do something to even the playing field between higher taxed teams and teams that operate at a lower tax i.e. Florida, Tampa, Dallas, etc. Question of the week: Out of Hutson, Reinbacher and Mailloux, who do you think has the highest overall talent, skillset, and toolbox? and between them who is your favorite and why?
