We all know about Valmiki Ramayana, consisting of 24000 verses, expounded by sage Valmiki. There is another scholar, who has composed in just 200 verses, the seven chapters of the Ramayana that was written by sage Valmiki. This is known as Sri Ramodantam. I have given a brief introduction about this in one of my earlier presentations. I am presenting Sri Ramodantam in fourteen episodes-first the summary of each Kanda followed by the slokas in the next. This is the sixth episode dealing with the recitation of the slokas of Aranya kandam. This is one of the beautiful hymns composed by Adi Sankara on Goddess Parvati. He says, ‘Oh, Mother Bhavani, you are my refuge, you alone are my protector. ‘I am tied in the bondage of worldly existence. It is an endless ocean of misery and I struggle with sorrow and fear. Neither the father nor the mother nor son, daughter, knowledge, profession nor anything in this world can help me. You alone are my guardian angel. ‘I have fallen with excessive desires and greed, drunken and intoxicated as it were. I have not done any good and virtuous deeds like charity, meditation or yoga. I do not even know them. I do not know the practice of tantra, or hymns and prayers. I do not know how to even worship. I have not done my traditional duties. I am engaged in bad conducts. I do not know anything about the various gods like Shiva, Vishnu and Rama. I always seek solace from you and you only. I am helpless, poor, afflicted by old age and disease. I am very weak and miserable. You are my refuge; you alone are my protector. Please give protection to me always.’ It is clear that Adi Sankara has composed this for the welfare of common people and recitation of this hymn will be of great advantage to all of us. This hymn on Lord Krishna was composed by Saint Nimbaarkaacharya. He is believed to have lived around the 11th and 12th centuries and is the exponent of the Dvaitadvaita school of philosophy. According to him the Jiva and the world are both separate from, and also identical with, Brahman. Adi Sankara was the exponent of the Kevala Advaita philosophy, Ramanuja of the Visishtadvaita philosophy, Madhvacharya of the Dvaita philosophy, Vallabhacharya of the Suddhadvaita philosophy and Nimbaarkaacharya of the Dvaitadvaita philosophy. Followers of this cult worship Radha and Krishna and Bhagavata Purana is the most important scripture for them. Nimbaarkaacharya has written many books including commentaries on the Brahma Sutras and the Bhagawat Gita and this small beautiful hymn is one of them. This hymn is to be recited in the early morning. xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx Please also visit my website at https://www.ramannithya.com/ . There are a number of stories and parables in the Puranas about Lord Ganesha. The Ganesha Purana and the Mudgala Purana are the core scriptures regarding Ganesha. They consider Ganesha as the Supreme Being, the one Almighty God. The Mudgala Purana indicates eight incarnations of Ganesha like the ten incarnations of Lord Vishnu. These incarnations are Vakratunda, Ekadanta, Mahodara, Gajavaktra, Lambodara, Vikata, Vignaraja and Dhumravarna. These incarnations are to subjugate the evil tendencies in the form of the demons, namely Maatsaryāsura (jealousy), Madāsura (arrogance), Mohāsura (delusion), Lobhāsura (greed), Krodhāsura (anger), Kāmāsura (lust), Mamāsura (possessiveness) and Ahamkarasura (attachment). The Ekadanta Stotram is from the second canto of Mudgala Purana relating to the subjugation of Madasura. It is said that Madasura was created by Sage Chyavana. Madasura propitiated Shukracharya who initiated him with a Shakti mantra. He performed intense penance by chanting the mantra. Soon he attained the power to rule the universe. With huge power in his disposal he became corrupt and evil. His activities caused immense difficulties to all living beings. The Devas and the Rishis approached Sanatkumara to find a way to defeat Madasura. Sanatkumara asked them to pray to Ganesha in Ekadanta form. Ganesha answered their prayers and appeared before Madasura as Ekadanta. On seeing him, Madasura did not fight and completely surrendered before Ekadanta. After the subjugation of Madasura, the Devas and the Rishis praise Lord Ganesha as in this Ekadanta stotram. Please also visit my website at https://www.ramannithya.com/ . This hymn is one in praise of Lord Krishna. The author of this hymn is not known. It consists of eight verses each verse ending with the phrase ‘Krishnam vande Jagatgurum’ meaning ‘I prostrate Krishna, the Lord of the Universe’. There is another scholar, who has composed in just 200 verses, the seven chapters of the Ramayana that was written by sage Valmiki. This is known as Sri Ramodantam. The author of this work is unknown. But it is said that one Parameshwara Kavi has composed this in the 15th century. In Sri Ramodantam, he has presented the entire Ramayana in his inimitable and simple style. This work also has the seven chapters namely-Bala Kanda, Ayodhya Kanda, Aranya Kanda, Kishkinda Kanda, Sundara Kanda, Yudha Kanda and Uttara Kanda. Sri Ramodantam is a minor poetical composition called in Sanskrit as Lagukavya. It is in simple Sanskrit and is generally prescribed as study material for the beginners in Sanskrit language. The term Sriramodantam is composed of two words ‘Srirama’ and ‘udantam’ meaning ‘the story of Srirama’. In the succeeding presentations, I shall tell this Ramodantam in fourteen episodes- first the summary of each Kanda followed by the recitation of the slokas in the next. This is a hymn in praise of Lord Rama and Goddess Sita. It describes the attributes and compassion of Rama and Sita. According to legends, this hymn is said to have been composed by Lord Hanuman. The hymn consists of ten verses based on simple sentences like this. Rama is the Lord of Ayodhya and a great ornament of the Raghu dynasty. Sita is the queen of Mithila and a great jewel of the Janaka clan. He is from the lineage of Surya. She is from the lineage of Chandra. Rama is the son of Dasaratha, born to Kousalya and Sage Vasishta is his family Priest. Sita who manifested from the Earth is the daughter of Janaka and Sage Sadananda is her family Priest. His broad eyes are like lotuses. Her eyes resemble the indeevara flowers. He has the attraction of the moon rays. She has the face resembling the moon. His gait resembles an elephant and she walks like a swan. Rama applies sandal paste to His chest. Sita decorates Herself with Kunkum. While he keeps a rope in His hands, her hand adorns a lotus. He resembles the dark cloud and she dazzles like gold. Rama protects the devotees who surrender to him. Sita is pleased with the devotion. He sits on the divine throne and she adorns the divine garments and garlands. Rama always keeps glancing at Sita and she lovingly invites his glances. They reflect each other. They are the great Divine Couple in the three worlds. I sincerely and devoutly surrender to them and sing and chant their praise. When we sincerely pray to them with ardent devotion, we shall become close to this Divine Couple and all our problems will vanish. The phalasruti says that this hymn praising Rama and Sita is being chanted as ordained by Sri Hanuman who has prayed to them with these lines. The person who sincerely reads and recites this hymn shall get his desires fulfilled. Please also visit my website at https://www.ramannithya.com/ .
