Welcome to the 29th episode. This episode I spoke with I would say a big inspiration on my work ethic and ideas when it comes to the theatre scene here in Australia. Amy Ingram. Amy is a director, actor, producer, and kind of all-around theatre maker. If any of those professions interest you then stick around. I found Amys perspective on the industry one of hustling and keeping a level of realism while also maintaining a clear passion for it. It finally happened and I am speaking to someone from the movement world. In episode 28 Jen Murray is my guest. Jen is a yoga practitioner, dance choreographer, and university tutor. We discuss Jen's career quite thoroughly, this concludes with us finding out why Jen moved to Australia. We also speak about the differences between Canada's art sector and Australia's and I definitely enjoyed her answer to that final question I always ask. Welcome to the 27th episode. I've been very excited to release this episode as I got to speak to renowned radio host Spencer Howson. Spencer has 25 + years of radio experience to draw from which makes this an invaluable episode to listen to. In this interview, you can tell he's actively watched the industry change over the years. We speak about his early days in radio, his love of community and information, his intentions to constantly innovate his radio shows, what he defines as a radio act as well as some general chats involving the radio and audio industry. He was incredibly responsive and open to my questions which makes for a great interview. In episode 26 I speak with Emma Dean. Emma is currently a Brisbane-based musician, who performs in cabarets, writes musicals, and can be frequently seen singing in a number of bands around Brisbane. She brings an immense openness and vulnerability to the interview and it definitely creates a great feel for the episode. We speak about her journey as a musician. Her time in New York. Her experiences here in Australia. Her interest in cabarets and why collaboration is such a fundamental part of her life. Also, she invites me to join her community choir which was a bit of fun. Welcome to the very first episode of 2021. In Episode 25 I start the year off very strong by speaking to Dramaturg and industry professional Saffron Benner. Saffron was once an academic who designed and taught the state's first formal dramaturgical course. Saffron has been apart of the arts industry for a number of years and as such as much wisdom to impart. It doesn't matter if you're not interested in Dramaturgy, or perhaps don't know what that is, this episode is a good insight into the theatre scene in Australia. Welcome to 2021! The year is in full swing and I have been incredibly busy getting interviews done before my studies resume. So, I made this little trailer to get you as excited as I am. I'll see you soon.
This is a little bonus episode on my reflections for this year. It has been a massive effort producing this podcast, while also being so rewarding. I am incredibly grateful to everyone who contributed to this podcast, whether that is by being interviewed or editing photos, or getting me in contact with potential interviewees. Thank you all for supporting this podcast, without an audience this project wouldn't be the same, so thank you. If you'd like to get in contact with the podcast send an email to anactorandamic@gmail.com or swing a message to the Facebook page. Stay safe out there and best of luck for the coming year. I'll see you all soon.…
It's episode 23 which is the final interview for the year. Lucky last is Maddie Nixon. Maddie is a playwright, stage manager, producer, youth arts practitioner. We speak about her early days and her progression from occupation to occupation. We then narrow in on the Queensland premiers drama award and Maddie being a finalist within it. It was definitely an enjoyable, comfortable and at times personal interview. If you'd like to get in contact with the podcast then send an email to anactorandamic@gmail.com or swing a message to the Facebook page. Thank you so much for supporting the podcast. That will do it for interviews this year. I'll return from the dead around February sometime. ATYP: https://www.facebook.com/AustralianTheatreforYoungPeople/…
Welcome to the 22nd episode of An Actor and a Mic, as well as the 3rd and final episode that includes Blake Hohenhaus for the year. As usual, it is a fairly relaxed conversation between friends, and this time it includes the creative development of Blake's play. We also speak about La Boite Assembly, A Dream Play, and very briefly his film scenes for his final year of uni. It's always a pleasure to catch up with him and see what he has been up to. As well as force him to sit down with me for an hour and reflect on some things he may not have. A big welcome to episode 21. This time round I speak with Anatoly Frusin. Anatoly is a director, a one-time actor as well as, a playwright who has translated the likes of Chekhov so those none Russian speaking individuals can enjoy it. He currently works as an educator for young aspiring artists in Tafe Queensland. After speaking about Anatoly's movements throughout differing studies and countries, we speak about translating texts as well as his position as an educator and a director, and plenty more. Welcome to the podcast 20th episode. It's so exciting to have gotten this far and to add on to the exciting episode number I interviewed a very exciting person. Madeleine Little. Madeleine is both a performer and a writer as well as being an advocate for making theatrical performance accessible. At the time of the interview, she was finalising her master's in which she was exploring accessible theatre. The making theatre accessible is a large portion of this conversation and having Madeleine there to graciously guide me through an area I have had very little experience in was incredibly insightful. Welcome to episode 19 where I interview David Burton. Dave is a well known award-winning Queensland based playwright, he's written two books to date and spends a lot of his time as a youth arts practitioner. We touch on a number of points, the state of Australian theatre and how to classify it, why Dave is a playwright instead of a screenplay writer, and a few other things. As you'll see it's a lovely and chaotic interview that I thoroughly enjoyed conducting. It's episode 18 and in this interview, I speak with Laura Trenerry. Laura is one-third of the Traveling sisters a performance comedy group that has performed at many many festivals. Her approach to her art seems like one enthralled in self-exploration and it seems as if it's a way for her to just live a little. Although she does make it sound like to get something out of this work you must first put all of yourself into it and that's what makes it so rewarding. If you're interested in performance art that in some ways transcends the stereotypical idea of what it means to be an actor then this interview is definitely for you. In episode 17 I speak to Phoebe Manning. Phoebe is a trained clown performer who currently works with Vulcana Circus as a facilitator predominantly working with children and young people. Phoebe also has a keen interest in working with members of the disabled community. We speak about the education sector and why Phoebe "ran away with the circus" we also touch on what performing arts means to her. This was a lovely and relaxed interview and I can't wait for you guys to get into it. Welcome to the podcasts' sweet 16th. This episode I dive into the world of screen acting with Simone Buchanan. We touch on what being a child actor was like and how it has now changed, I ask whether acting ever became less than a passion and more of a job as well as nepotism in the acting world. Towards the end of the podcast, we speak of balancing a family with being an actress as well as what Simone would love to see the industry take on board. I also have to put a trigger warning for talk of sexual assault and things surrounding that from 16 mins to 20 mins. If you need to avoid such topics then I implore you to do so. I've been very much looking forward to releasing episode 15. I just want to see if it tickles your creative minds, as much as it did mine. In this episode, we get to hear from Damien Cassidy, a writer, performer, musician, producer, just an all-round creative leader. However, we do spend most of this episode speaking about what the profession of producer entails and really what a producer does. As well as of course Damien's journey as an artist. The other brief things that we touch on are the value of teaching as an artist, the importance of mentors, and one phrase I wanted to flag that you may not have been aware of is the phrase art dump. If you haven't heard it may be worth investigating. Episode 14 was an absolute pleasure to record. My guest Ash Gierke brought so much energy and passion to the interview that I couldn't help but laugh out loud. A lot. Ash is a radio host and a sports presenter on the Sunshine Coast. We begin with Ash telling me how she fell into hosting radio while simultaneously training for the 2012 Olympics. We touch on her average work day, the difference between presenting sport and hosting radio, how character traits come into play on a breakfast show and it finishes with a lovely chat about Ash's ideas on how to influence her community in the best way she can. Despite the unlucky connotations, episode 13 was a pleasure of an interview. In this interview, I speak with Liam Fitz-Gibbon, a technical coordinator and audio technician. It was amazing to sit down and speak to someone from the backstage world as well as someone who knows a lot more about music than I and was willing to teach me. We discuss Liams favourite kind of job, what annoys techies, what setting up for a music gig is like and at the end we do a quickfire question roundabout music jargon. The answers to which actually helped me with some podcast related items. So as always if you enjoyed the episode let me know by sending me an email at anactorandamic@gmail.com or swing a message to the Facebook page. With episode 12 we are officially halfway through the episodes for the year. This episode is very regional arts-themed which I found so enlightening. My guest is Benjamin Tupas, a multimedia artist and artistic director, as well as being a primary school teacher. I met Ben through volunteering for the Toowoomba Lit Festival, which Ben is the artistic director of. We spend a lot of time speaking about Ben's feelings towards both regional and metro artists. Ben also brings up what he refers to as his conflicts. These are decisions and feelings he has that leave him torn and it's quite an interesting idea. Episode 11 is a bit of a special one as I did a lot of research in preparation for this episode and I also had the chance to catch up with my guest from episode 1 Blake Hohenhaus. The episode is broken into two parts. The first half is Blake and I discuss how the year has gone so far. How our studies have been impacted as well as seeing how Blake is progressing on his full-length play script. The second half of the episode is an industry discussion where I give statistics about the Australian arts sector. These stats are around the lifestyle and income of Australian artists. Thank you for listening to episode 11. If you'd like to get in contact with the podcast, swing an email to anactorandamic@gmail.com or send the Facebook page a message. Unfortunately, we couldn't get through all of my own research in this episode and because of this, I have put together a short resource consisting of 4 studies that can be used as a leap pad into the Australian arts sector. You can access it by clicking this link below. If you'd like to learn more about it before clicking on it, you'll need to listen to the mid-roll. I hope it helps. We finally made it to double digits. Episode 10 is live and ready to go. In this episode, I interview Natalie Stanfield an all-round makeup artist. Natalie has a firm grip on her sectors workings and is definitely worthwhile to listen to if you're wanting to become a makeup artist or even an actor. We do speak about things actors do that grind make up artists gear. We speak about the difference between screen and stage makeup and we also speak about what it is like working with actors with a large level of fame. In this episode, episode 9, I got to speak with Dani Cabs. Dani is a performer and photographer I met through something called Guru Dudu. Dani studied photography here at QCA and then went on to teach it. While teaching he was working on his honor's part-time and this is where his performance journey began. Since then he has performed solo shows at many fringe festivals here in Australia and also over at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival. Something unique that we speak about is Guru Dudu and Dani's passions there. If you are a fan of love and getting out of your skin, You'll definitely like this interview. As Dani says early on in the interview, he has a great journey for those who are later in their life and think that they can't make a change. In episode 8 I speak with a friend of mine Scott Hazell. Scott is an aspiring cinematographer and a mature student here at USQ. In this episode, we speak about the state of Australia's film industry and the argument that Netflix is killing our industry. I ask Scott why he thinks producing a film is so expensive and also what he thinks the necessities for shooting your first feature film are. It was lovely to sit down with Scott and learn about a lot of the things that happen behind the scenes. Coming from an actor's perspective it was definitely handy to know. If the prospect of hearing how a man got chickens to paint canvases and then putting those canvases in his mouth for an artistic purpose excites you, then you're in for a good episode. My guest Paddy long is a visual artist based here in Toowoomba, but his latest project has taken him all over the world. We speak about the pretentiousness of art and why this may actually be necessary and Paddy goes into detail with some of his projects and how they have shaped his view as an Australian Visual Artist. As another second Monday rolls around with it comes another episode of An Actor and a Mic. We've made it up to episode 6 where I interview Claire Bourke. Claire is an internationally traveled stage manager, who in this episode I find out is also a classically trained saxophonist. Claire speaks of her institutional training and how she went to both the Conservatorium and NIDA. We also discuss what is it like internationally traveling as a stage manager and the pros and cons that come with it. This one is definitely a must listen and I also hope you enjoy the little surprise that's waiting in the middle of the episode. If you'd like to get in contact with the podcast send an email to anactorandamic@gmail.com or swing a message to the Facebook page. I hope you're all staying safe out there and not feeling to locked up. Catch you in two weeks.…
In this episode, I sit down with actor, director and vocal coach, Marcus Oborn. Although this interview touches on all three professions, we predominately discuss his vocal coach training. I met Marcus through my university degree as one of my lecturers and it was a pleasure to sit down and learn all about his journey. We speak about his beliefs around the importance of diversity of practice and about his leap into undertaking a training program under THE authority of vocal practices. A trip that took him to New York and was supported by the Australian Government through the Australia Council for the arts individual fund. Although we speak about voice acting, there is plenty in this episode for any artist. Hope you enjoy and I will see you in two weeks.…
Welcome to episode 4 of An Actor and a Mic. My name's Griffin Walsh and this episode I had the pleasure to interview Earl Marrows. he's a composer, with a passion for many other facets of art. His journey has taken him from Melbourne, where I met him, all the way to New York where he now studies a master's degree at NYU. He's a brilliant and funny man who clearly has a bright future in music. So I'm glad he's over in New York representing Australia's emerging talent. I'd also like to note that I had a lot of fun in this interview and despite not being able to ask very specific music questions, you get an idea of the journey he has taken and why he has gone that way. So I hope you get something out of this even if you aren't planning on becoming a composer. I hope you're all staying safe out there and not going too crazy. Enjoy this episode and I'll see you guys in two weeks for the next episode where I interview a voice actor who is taking part in an overseas training program that will make him the only one of his kind in Australia.…
Episode 3 is my interview with Chris Sun. He is an Australian director and a writer of both screenplays and a book. Chris has a filmography of 4 feature lengths films and in this interview we discuss how he got there. Through his passions for horror, gore and special effects, into how he jumped straight into film making with no prior experience and finally, into how he got his films out there. We also discuss Chris's belief that Australian cinemas need to do more for indie productions and the industry as a whole. Chris is a testament to how not being afraid of who you are really can send you places. In episode 2 I interview Brisbane based artist Emma Black. Emma is an actor, director and co-founder of Sharehouse Theatre Company. We discuss her early years in acting and then her time at university and move into the conception of the Sharehouse Theatre Company. We also discuss the role of politics in art versus entertainment for entertainment's sake. Episode 2 is an interview, based around the experiences of an artist who graduated and been within the industry for a few years but hasn't had long enough to complete ground their career. Emma is such an amazing, kind-hearted person and I can't wait for you to hear her passions and ideas or this industry. Welcome to the very first episode of An Actor and a Mic. This episode is of my interview with Blake Hohenhaus however, it really turned into more of a discussion around art. Blake is an acting student finishing his final year and a friend of mine. We discuss the place of arts in contemporary Australia, why we believe it's so hard to become an artist in Australia, our wishes both for the industry and for our own journey and at the end, I propose a podcasting venture I'd like to take with Blake this year. This episode is perfect for getting to know myself and my current opinions around art, what I want this podcast to be and my wishes to encourage as many wannabe artists as possible to take the leap and push for their own art. I hope you enjoy the episode.
