John McNamara was one of five victims gunned down and killed on June 28, 2018, at the Annapolis Capital Gazette offices. At the time of his death, McNamara, a veteran sportswriter, was chronicling the D.C. region’s many contributions to the game of basketball for a book he was writing. He started working on “The Capital of Basketball” around 2007. A few months after the shooting, McNamara's wife, Andrea Chamblee, took on the task of completing her husband's book which was recently released.
