On this episode of Advances in Care , host Erin Welsh and Dr. Craig Smith, Chair of the Department of Surgery and Surgeon-in-Chief at NewYork-Presbyterian and Columbia discuss the highlights of Dr. Smith’s 40+ year career as a cardiac surgeon and how the culture of Columbia has been a catalyst for innovation in cardiac care. Dr. Smith describes the excitement of helping to pioneer the institution’s heart transplant program in the 1980s, when it was just one of only three hospitals in the country practicing heart transplantation. Dr. Smith also explains how a unique collaboration with Columbia’s cardiology team led to the first of several groundbreaking trials, called PARTNER (Placement of AoRTic TraNscatheteR Valve), which paved the way for a monumental treatment for aortic stenosis — the most common heart valve disease that is lethal if left untreated. During the trial, Dr. Smith worked closely with Dr. Martin B. Leon, Professor of Medicine at Columbia University Irving Medical Center and Chief Innovation Officer and the Director of the Cardiovascular Data Science Center for the Division of Cardiology. Their findings elevated TAVR, or transcatheter aortic valve replacement, to eventually become the gold-standard for aortic stenosis patients at all levels of illness severity and surgical risk. Today, an experienced team of specialists at Columbia treat TAVR patients with a combination of advancements including advanced replacement valve materials, three-dimensional and ECG imaging, and a personalized approach to cardiac care. Finally, Dr. Smith shares his thoughts on new frontiers of cardiac surgery, like the challenge of repairing the mitral and tricuspid valves, and the promising application of robotic surgery for complex, high-risk operations. He reflects on life after he retires from operating, and shares his observations of how NewYork-Presbyterian and Columbia have evolved in the decades since he began his residency. It's Easter, we're March 31st - a few hours before the flip of another page on the calendar! Seasons are changing, and the Energy with it as well too... I went on a walk under a beautiful blue bird sky in my hometown while recording this podcast. I am talking about my trial of creating the first few pieces of content and about my attempts at transparency, the need for breaking free and the Matrix! Things are amazing when you look at them the right way... Much love to all of you who are listening!…
Today, I closed my first official client ever! I'm telling the story of how a month before I was not even to pay for gas to go back home... It's important to work, but you have to be careful with doing things that don't drain you, but rather brighten you up! Your Energy is precious, you have to also take time to breathe, meditate, and refresh your perspectives...…
It's cool to have ideas. I know. I have written 7-8 journals over the past three years without ever doing anything about those ideas... Wanna breakthrough? Have a process that brings your ideas to life. First step - SHARE THEM. Happiness is only real when shared, so are the brightest ideas...
What do we mean when we say 'Think outside the box'? Yesterday, there was a family party at my place, and I got out of the basement to chat with some of the guests. One of them asked me about my entrepreneurial journey. While I was talking, I realized that the one thing that will help me going forward, is that I know myself now. How? Because I reached my limits. When you come to that moment where you reach your limitations, only then do you truly know and understand yourself.…
If you think that you will go to a meeting and close right off the bat, you're expecting outcomes from your actions. It's your Ego's linear way of thinking. But, what if what you expect does not happen? You'll get down. Unmotivated. The secret, is to change your perspective. How? By understanding that the business is WHO you are, an extension of yourself, and that it builds on a higher level. It is having faith that something else you did, ultimately, will interconnect with some of your micro actions. Switching perspectives is about connecting to who you are, and believing that on a macro-level, you're heading towards your North Star. No matter the uncertainty!…
You are not who you think you are. Rather, your value literally is correlated with your beliefs about who you are. If you want to succeed in business, in the marketplace, you need to be able to listen humbly, and contribute by offering who you are, entirely, in full honesty and transparency! Here's a great example of what just happenned this morning with a potential client I was working on... All it took was 10minutes and an unshakeable belief in myself to turn their decision around!…
Sitting on my desk for days, here they were, looking at me... And all of a sudden, I had a dream last night... a GIGANTIC Godzilla started to rampage the city... Really significantly, that Godzilla represented all my fears, which the little child in me had to face... Like my mentor told me once - "Heal the boy, and the man will appear..."…
Maistream has told us we need breakfast to get enough Energy to kickstart the day... but it couldn't be further away from the truth! Our cells need activation Energy moments before they metabolize the food we ingest, to transform it into the nutrients that are gonna FUEL our bodies - those fats, proteins, and all the other good stuff! So, here's why your breakfast is screwing you up... and here's what it actually means!…
Hi guys! I've always wanted to start a podcast, because a lot of people told me I had a lot of things to say... about everything! Actual, genuine and truthful things... I was always wondering 'how' - strategizing and trying to think too much how to just start! I discovered Anchor, an app, and they made starting a podcast so effortless, simple, that I had NO choice but to start my podcast journey, from my parent's basement... Let me introduce you who I am, directly from my parent's basement...…
