The newest sermons from Bethel Evangelical Free Church on SermonAudio.
In Deuteronomy 13 Moses calls Israel to be alert to apostasy. He gives three scenarios of the danger, and explains how it is to be resisted. We see first the danger of pretenders to revelations trying to draw people away; second the situation where people we are in close elationships try to draw us away, and thirdly a case where a city of revolutionaries seek to draw God' people away from him. This must be applied to the Church as God's Covenant Community, called to Covenant faithfulness to the faithful God.…
What is the character of God's rule in people? What are Christians like? In Matthew 18 we see the perspective of the Kingdom is one of humility, the procedure of the Kingdom is one of love that seeks to reclaim, and the Kingdom is made up of pardoned peple who, knowing how great God's grace to them is, are gracious to others.…
Christ who came down and died has been raised from the dead and ascended on high, and is coming again. The third part of the Nicene Creed's teaching on the person of Christ deals with his Exaltation. We look here at the Resurrection, the Ascension, what Chris isdoing now, and at his Second Advent.
God is to be worshipped in the way that he has said; we are not to worship God in the way of false gods. Deuteronomy 12 begins a new section in the preaching of the Covenant looking at how God is worshipped. We see the meaning of the single central Sanctuary, of the Sacrifices, and of the Service God desires.…
The Lord of Glory came down and took humanity. Matthew 17 begins with the Transfiguration, where Chrst's glory shines, and ends with his voluntarily paying the Temple Tax, from which he was exempt. We see the Transfiguration, the need for trust, and the tax Christ paid, which in turn points us to his Atonement.…
Having spoken of the eternal Godhood of Christ, the Nicene Creed goes on to speak of the Incarnation and Atonement, emphasising that these things are "for us and for our salvation." We see that Christ really became man, and that he died for his people in history.
Deuteronomy 11 sets before God's people a blessing and a curse. God's actions call his people to respond in love to his love. We see the past of God's work in grace and judgement, the providence of God that calls us to trust him, and the promise of his grace and blessing to those who do.
The Gospels all challenge us with the person of Christ. Because he is who he is, everything is affected. We see in Matthew 16 the caution he gives to avoid false teaching; the confession of Peter that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of the Living God; and the challenge that brings to follow him truly.
At the heart of the Nicene Creed is the person of Christ. It begins with the eternal Son, confessing the one Lord, and that he is the historical Jesus. What does it mean to confess the eternal Son? And how is this eternal Sonship central to Christianity?
God's covenant with his people is gracious, not based on their work, but on his love. We see in Deuteronomy 10 the covenant renewed, the consecration of God's servants, and the Calling of God's people to reflect his covenant love.
The Lord Jesus is a perfect Saviour and a reliable guide, unlike the Pharisees. We see in Matthew 15 his controversy with the Pharisees, his teaching on the true corruption and therefore need of humanity, and the confidence that we may have in him.
God's blessings to his people do not come by merit, they come through a Mediator. In Deuteronomy 9 Moses reminds the people that they were not delivered because of might or merit, he calls them to remember their past sins, and to recall God's grace to them through his mediation. So he points us to Christ, the better Mediator.…
Fear or faith, which rules your life? In Matthew 14 we see the fear of Herod, the feeding of the multitude, and the faith of the Disciples. Herod, the would-be king who rules by fear, is himself ruled by fear, but Christ, the true and compassionate King, rules by faith.
The Nicene Creed begins with the confession of one God, the Father Almighty, the Creator. How does the Scripture reveal the Father, and why is he called the Father? Why is he called Almighty? What is the significance of the doctrine of creation?
Remember not to forget! In Deuteronomy 8 God calls on his people to remember. We are called to remember the past, what God has done. We are to remember God's purpose, which is for good, and we are to remember the peril of forgetting and falling.
Christ taught in parables - but why? Parables both reveal and conceal, they are intended to spur thought, and those who will not think miss their meaning. We see in Matthew 13 the need of consideration in parables, the challenge that the parables answer, and the call for comprehension, understanding, that they give.…
2025 marks 1700 years since the Council of Nicea in 325. But what was the Council of Nicea, and why does it matter? In this brief historical introduction to a study of the Nicene Creed we address both the actual history of Nicea and some of the myths told about it.
What does it mean for the Church to be God's chosen people? We see from Deuteronomy 7 the Conflict of God's people, the Calling of God's people, and the Confidence of God's people. Chosen to be holy, we are in a no-compromise conflict; we are called to be holy, and our confidence is in God alone.
What do God's enemies look like? The people who most opposed Christ were the Pharisees, who combined a profession of religion with legalistic cruelty. We see in Matthew 12 their attitude to the Sabbath, the issue of their speech, and their demand for a sign.
Revelation ends on a high note. After speaking of the glories of the New Jeusalem, John encourages us in expectation and hope. Christ is coming, the Bible is complete, and we look for the age to come.
What lies at the heart of the Law of God? The answer is love! Love is the fulfilling of the Law, but what does that mean? In Deuteronomy 6 we see the devotion at the heart of the Law, the danger of forgetting God, and the duty to remember in reverence.
Christ calls to the labouring and heavy laden, calling them to become his disciples. We see in Mathew Christ's commendation of John the Baptist, his condemnation of the cities that would not hear him or John, and his call to the heavy laden to become disciples. We see how Christ cares for his own, and is gracious to those who struggle.…
In Revelation 21 John gives an impressionist picture of the new creation, its perfection, and especially of the New Jerusalem, the Church perfected. We see God's perfect work, and how the true golden age is not past, but future, when Christ comes again.
Christians are saved by the Trinity. We see in 1 Peter 1:2 that Christians are elect by the Father, sanctified in the Spirit, and live life in the Son, with the obedience of faith and the sprinkling of his blood for pardon.
The Gospel is Trinitarian, becase God is Trinity. We see in John 3 how Christians are born again by the Holy Spirit, redeemed by the Son, and loved by the Father. The good news is not of a God who stands afar off, but of the God who comes to us in Christ, and dwells in us by the Spirit.
Revelation 20 is the book's last survey of the Church Age, viewed from the persepctive of Satan bound. We see that Christ's cross has restricted the devil, and the saint reign in heaven with Christ. But at the end of the age Satan will be let loose, to be finally destroyed. And after that comes the Judgment, where condemnation is by works, and salvation by grace.…
At Pentecost we remember and celebrate the sending of the Holy Spirit upon the Church. Several times in Scripture the Spirit is called the Spirit of Christ, why is that? We see that the Spirit was sent by Christ, the Spirit bears witness to Christ, and the Spirit unites to Christ.
Revelation 19 shows us two last suppers - the Marriage Supper of the Lamb, and the Supper of the Great God. All mankind will be at one or another of these; either saved by grace in the Church, or justly condemned for sin. The justice of God is satisfied, and the grace of God glorifed.
God has entered into Covenant with his people, and thus his people respond to him according to his Word, which tells us what he has done and who he is. We see in Deuteronomy 5 the repetition of the Ten Commandments, which teach us what godliness and goodness look like, and are reminded the needof a covenant mdiator, a go-between, pointing us to Christ.…
Christ has given his Church a ministry; what does that ministry look like? We see in Matthew 10 that it is a prepared ministry, a persecuted ministry, and a persevering ministry.
Babylon falls. Babylon, the city of man, is built on greed, exploitation, and murder, and God will judge it, and does judge it. In Revelation 18 God calls his people to come out of Babylon, and shows the world's lament over its fall, while the godly rejoice.
To be God's people is to be privileged as nobody else is. In Deuteronomy 4 we see the privilege of God's people in having his Word and his nearness, the peril of idolatry, and the promise of God's grace.
Chris came in compassion. We see in Matthew 9:18-38 the confidence of faith, the contrast between those who believe and the Pharisees, and the compassion of Christ.
Christ came that we might be forgiven. We see in Matthew 9:1-17 his confrontation with the Pharisees over the issue of forgiveness. We see the forgiveness Christ gives, the followers he calls, and the fulfilment that he brings. Do we believe in the forgiveness of sins?
Before Jordan, Moses encourages God's people that God who has been faithful to this point will be faithful to the end. We see here the hope of Christians, that Christ will bring all his people home. We see the success of God's battle, the solidarity of God's people, and submission to God's good will.…
In Revelation 17 John is shown theworst woman in the world, Babylon! What is Babylon, and what is its relevance for us? And why should we be wary, but not afraid of her?
The Lord leads his people. In Deuteronomy 2 we see how God led his people through the wilderness and to the land of Sihon, King of Heshbon. We see God's mercy, God's majesty, and God's might.
Christ challenges us. We see in Matthew 8 the deliverance he brings, the discipleship to which he call us, and the Dominion that he exercises. We see how his power challenges us to respond to him, but also how he challenges our comfort, calling us to follow him.
God is just, and his judgments are seen in the earth now, and will be full when Christ comes again. In Revelation 16 we see God's judgments depicted as seven plagues, which correspond to the seven trumpets and seven seals seen earlier in the book. The first four are God's wrath seen in nature; the fifth is God's wrath seen in the fall of empires, the sixth the preparation for the last battle, and the last is God's wrath in its fulness when Christ returns.…
Deuteronomy is the preaching of the Covenant. It begins with several chapters of history. We see the care of God for his people, the cowardice of the people in the face of challenges, and the consequences of that cowardice. And we see how Christ meets our needs by taking our sin.
Christ concludes his Sermon on the Mount by setting out the two ways, of life and death, before his hearers. He shows two attitudes, hypocrisy and faith; two ways, life and death; and two houses, the house on the rock and the house on the sand. We are to be doers of the Word, not only hearers.
Revelation 15 gives us another look into heaven. We see the victorious saints and hear their song, and we see the seven angels who will pour out the wrath of God.
The risen Christ bears scars - the scars of his Passion. We see in John 20:19-30 the peace Christ gives, the glory of his Person, and the purpose of the Gospel. Thomas' confession of faith in the scarred Saviour is for us, that we too may confess him Lord and God.
In Revelation 14 John turns from the beasts to the Lamb, and sees the great reality that Christ is victorious and will save his people completely. He sees the Church that is faithful, and hears the warnings about the fate of evil and the blessing of those who die in the Lord. Finally he sees the last harvest; the faithful saved, and the unbelieving condemned.…
