Carey Foster appeared in the original TOS pilot, "The Cage," with Jeffrey Hunter as a character who ended up not making the final cut. However, she returned as a Starfleet officer clad in blue in the background of many episodes during the first season of the show. Foster's time in Star Trek was the next step in her relationship with Gene Roddenberry, her uncle, who had previously cast her in an episode of "The Lieutenant." Her Hollywood career had little to do with acting until that point, predominantly working as a dancer in big budget musical movies and several features with Elvis Presley - a superstar she briefly dated! Carey Foster stops by Trek Untold to tell us stories about working on these many sets, her dancing pedigree, and what she does today as an educator in the Montessori system of learning. Plus, her longtime friendship with Teri Garr, the risque choices of Gene Roddenberry in the original Star Trek pilot that almost got the show cancelled before it began, and the actual name of the Starfleet officer she played that was never revealed on TV! Trek Untold has the scoop on some hot new Star Trek merchandise coming in 2025 and beyond, courtesy of our chat with Ben Robinson. It's been four years since Mr. Robinson joined this podcast to promote his work with Eaglemoss, a company that shut its doors in 2022. Now, Ben has moved on to become Creative Consultant on Fanhome for Star Trek product and Creative Director with Master Replicas for everything Sci-Fi, as well as writing Trek books, including helping Nana Visitor with her recent "Open A Channel" book. Ben tells us what really happened with Eaglemoss Hero Collector, how Master Replicas became involved in Trek beginning with their purchase of the warehouse goods, and how that led Ben to work with them, as well as Fanhome. From there, it's a dive into what's new and on the way, including why Fanhome is focusing their starships on the new Trek shows instead of the legacy ones, answering the age-old question of why their ships aren’t always in scale with each other, thoughts on the potential of larger piece-by-piece subscription builds with new starships, all of the details about Master Replicas’ new action figure line (created in the style of the classic Playmates Star Trek figures from the 90s), plus much more across this episode that will bring out the collector in you (and make you wish you had more gold-pressed latinum in your vault). Joe Sikoryak has been a fan of Star Trek from the early days, and that includes being a part of some of the very first fan conventions in the franchise's history. Today, Joe is an illustrator who has written books and comics on his experiences from these times, and on this Trek Untold, he schools us with a history lesson on what these events were like. Joe talks about cosplay before it was called that, what vendors sold, how the celebrities were and how the interactions differ today, his surprising encounters with William Shatner, and what it was like to be a fan of a canceled sci-fi show in its infancy before it grew into the monolith it is now. Fan films are an integral part of Star Trek history, with lovers of the franchise creating homemade versions of the show as far back as when the original series first hit the airwaves. Nearly six decades later, the tradition continues, but now with higher budgets and more impressive effects. “Farragut Forward” is the latest entry in the ongoing saga of the Farragut crew, a fan-made homage to Trek with nearly two decades of stories produced on film. Their newest feature debuted on October 1, 2024, combining practical effects with modern CGI and classic Trek storytelling to make a compelling movie. Trek Untold chatted with producer and star John Broughton, director Johnny Karzai, and performers (and “Farpoint Toys” store and museum owners) Penelope and Justin about the making of “Farragut Forward” and why this fan film is worth checking out. Bonita Friedericy is always cool, calm, and collective... as in the Borg collective! Trek fans know her as the scientist named Rooney from the "Enterprise" episode titled "Regeneration," which chronologically introduced the Borg to Star Trek. You might not know the story of how she got that role, as well as the secrets behind filming and the origins of her costume. Friedericy is also the wife of John Billingsley, AKA Dr. Phlox. She explains whether or not this relationship had anything to do with getting the part (Spoilers: it didn't!), and stories from her hubby visiting her on set. Plus, being an understudy for Jennifer Tilly, playing General Diane Beckman on the cult classic TV show "Chuck" with Zachary Levi, her unusual role as Terry Loach on "Preacher," and stories about John Cho, Stephen Tobolowsky, Ted Danson, and more! Laurence Luckinbill's career on stage and screen was filled with high-risk choices that often led to great reward. One of those decisions just happens to be Star Trek related. Trek fans know Mr. Luckinbill as Sybok from "Star Trek V: The Final Frontier," where he donned the pointy ears to play Spock's brother. We learn about how he got the role, his thoughts on who the character is and why he is a more complicated villain than you might believe, working with William Shatner and Leonard Nimoy, and why the much-maligned fifth movie is better than you remember. We also learn about growing up in Arkansas and how he found the theater, lessons from George Kernodle and Uta Hagen, insight into his "Great Americans" one-man play series, and a deep dive into his multi-year role in the milestone play and film, "The Boys in The Band," a breakout show for LGBTQ culture during a pivotal time in gay rights, of which he is the last surviving cast member. This might be one of the most in-depth interviews with this legendary performer on YouTube, so get ready for a deep dive into this actor who has long earned his time in the spotlight. The first company to tackle Star Trek action figures was Mego Toys, innovating new designs and production methods that kept their products affordable while creating enduring memories. However, despite their huge success with Star Trek, things behind the scenes with the company slowly fell apart. Paul Clarke, better known to toy collectors as Dr. Mego, visits the show to discuss the origin story of Mego Toys, how its founder, Marty Abrams, began to pick up licensed properties before other companies, making "World's Greatest Superheroes" figures with both Marvel and DC Comics characters, his road to Star Trek in the 1970s through "Planet of The Apes," and the secrets behind their Trek toys, including whether the figures were based on TOS or the animated series, how the playsets were made, and the answers to unsolved Trek toy mysteries. Plus, the controversial circumstances that caused Mego to shut down in 1982, how they resurrected the company in 2018, the true story of why Mego didn't make "Star Wars" action figures, how Marty helped bring Transformers to America, why Trek toys are so hard to sell in 2024 and what Playmates did wrong with their most recent attempt, and what the future holds for Mego in 2024 and beyond. Christine Harnos played Tessa Omond in the "Star Trek: Voyager" episode "Timeless," which is notable for being the 100th episode of the series. Harnos joins Trek Untold to discuss her role in Trek, along with more from her life and career, and why she always follows her heart to guide her every step of the way. Christine talks about going from modeling into acting, booking her first gig in the unusual Disney film about teens rescuing Navy SEALs aptly titled "The Rescue," playing Kaye Faulkner in "Dazed and Confused," her seven-year stint on ER as Jennifer Greene alongside show-husband Anthony Edwards, an obscure 80s comedy called "Cold Dog Soup" with an unbelievable underhanded backstory, and being part of controversial animation legend Ralph Bakshi's only live-action directorial film, "Cool and The Crazy." From there, we beam into our Trek talk to discuss "Timeless," including working with Garrett Wang, Robert Picardo, and Robert Beltran (who she performed with before this episode), being directed by Levar Burton, the challenges of her role and character, and what she recalls from the experience. Deborah Strang's life journey took her from rural Virginia near the Appalachian Mountains to the stages of New York, regional theater across the United States, and finally arriving in Hollywood. Trekkies remember Strang from her role as Admiral T'Lara in the fourth season "Star Trek: Deep Space Nine" episode, "Rules of Engagement," but her career has some other Trek connections, too. We learn about her origins in the performing arts and the tools she picked up along the way; one of the most valuable lessons on acting she learned from her first TV gig, working with Scott Bacula on "Quantum Leap," and Pedro Pascal on "Touched by An Angel" in one of his earliest roles (ages before becoming Din Djarin in "The Mandalorian") and being part of the DC and Marvel Comics animated universes. Today, Deborah is a resident artist at "A Noise Within," a theater company in California that she's been involved with for decades and continues to perform with today. Natalija Nogulich may have played a stern character in Star Trek TNG and DS9 as Admiral Nechayev, but she's nothing like that in real life! Nogulich drops rank and tells us about the person beyond the command uniform, giving us an amazing life journey that brought this performer to all parts of stage and screen. We learn about her time on the set of her Trek appearances, the real-life inspiration her character was based on, her relationship with Picard and if romance was in the cards, and long-term plans for the Admiral that never materialized. From a dancer to an actor, we also hear memories of her first film in "Stony Island," lessons from one of her acting teachers, William H. Macy, stories with Angela Lansbury from "Murder, She Wrote," her time as Berta in Netflix's "Fuller House," how she perfected the art of speaking in accents and more! Meet Natalija and many other guests at Trek Long Island 2024 this summer in Hauppauge, NY, from May 31 to June 2, featuring celebrity guests from multiple eras of Star Trek shows, authors, artists, podcasters, and more in this epic event. For three seasons, David Ajala played Cleveland Booker on "Star Trek: Discovery," a charming scoundrel who stole Michael Burnham's heart. Trek Untold chats with the equally charismatic actor to learn the inside scoop on Booker and what's been happening to him in Season 5, working with Sonequa Martin-Green and Doug Jones, his thoughts on his powerful monologue from the end of Season 4, BIPOC representation in Star Trek, what happened when he found out this season of Discovery would be their last, and if he would ever want to be part of a Discovery movie. NOTE: This interview was done in conjunction with Episode 6 of Season 7 of Season 5, and doesn't discuss plot elements beyond this point in the season Support Trek Untold by becoming a Patreon at Patreon.com/TrekUntold . At nearly 80 years old, Castulo Guerra is more energized than ever about acting. Originally born in Argentina, his life changed when a classic movie was filmed in his small town, setting him on a journey that brought him onto stages across the United States. Today, he tells us his motivating and inspirational life story and perspective on acting! Trekkies know Guerra as Seth Mendoza in the 3rd season "Star Trek: The Next Generation" episode, "The Price," but he's a veteran of stage and screen with endless stories to tell about his decades-spanning career that includes James Cameron's "Terminator 2," "The A-Team," and working with young up-and-comers like Morgan Freeman, Denzel Washinton, and Raul Julia before they made it big. Guerra is an actor who began his career when Hollywood had no idea what to do with a Latino performer, and today, he continues to perform in a world that is at last ready to hear stories from this segment of underrepresented artists. Guerra is starring in "Ghost Waltz" with the Latino Theatre Company this summer. Tickets are available at https://www.latinotheaterco.org/ghostwaltz Check out Trek Long Island 2024 this summer in Hauppauge, NY, from May 31 to June 2 to meet guests from multiple eras of Star Trek shows and more in this epic event.
