On June 25th 2025, in collaboration with Open Folk, we presented our first ever live interview event in Los Angeles. As Open Folk put it: "In These Lines is a live event where three artists each bring one song — not just to perform, but to explore. They sit down with Sofia Loporcaro, host of Before The Chorus, to talk about where the song came from, what it meant to write it, and what it still holds. Then they play it. Just the song, and the truth behind it." Before a song is released, a record is produced, or a chorus is written, the musicians that write them think. A lot. They live. A lot. And they feel. A LOT. Hosted by award-winning interviewer Sofia Loporcaro, Before the Chorus explores the genuine human experiences behind the music. Sofia’s deep knowledge of music and personal journey with mental health help her connect with artists on a meaningful level. This is a space where fans connect with artists, and listeners from all walks of life feel seen through the stories that shape the music we love. About the host: Sofia Loporcaro is an award-winning interviewer and radio host who’s spent over 8 years helping musicians share their stories. She’s hosted shows for Amazing Radio, and Transmission Roundhouse. Now on Before the Chorus, she’s had the chance to host guests like Glass Animals, Feist, Madison Cunningham, Mick Jenkins, & Ru Paul's Drag Race winner Shea Couleé. Learn more about your ad choices. On July 22, 2025, we lost Birmingham-born rock vocalist and cultural icon Ozzy Osbourne, rock's "prince of darkness," at the age of 76. His death, from complications due to Parkinson's Disease, ends a career spanning five decades, in which he pioneered an entire subgenre of heavy metal music, as frontman for Black Sabbath, before going on to an even bigger career as a solo artist, where he is credited for introducing the guitarist Randy Rhoads to the wider rock world, and for creating the wildly popular Ozzfest tours. Then, when he'd done it all, he and members of his family, Jack, Kelly, and his manager-wife Sharon, became pioneers of "reality TV" with the hit series, The Osbournes . On this very special episode, we hear two personal stories of how Ozzy's music and persona touched the lives of music industry professionals who were also, first and foremost, fans. Returning to our program, Jenn D'Eugenio (Women In Vinyl), made the journey to Birmingham for Ozzy's bittersweet Back To The Beginning farewell show, . She shares her first-hand descriptions of the event, plus two other fascinating Black Sabbath stories. Also returning is acclaimed music journalist Sylvie Simmons ( Sounds, Kerrang! , and more), who took some time away from writing an Ozzy piece for Mojo magazine to share some personal anecdotes with Ozzy dating all the way back to his last days in Sabbath and how Sharon navigated his career back to the top. Our guest Chris Stamey's new album is called Anything Is Possible , and during long and fruitful musical career, he's done just about everything. As a founding member of The dB's he helped define an era of 1970s indie rock and power pop, and his solo work (and duo work with his fellow dB Peter Holsapple) only widened his songwriting vocabulary. Among the distinguished guests joining Stamey on Anything Is Possible are another NC music legend Mitch Easter, plus some friends of the podcast, including The Lemon Twigs, Pat Sansone (Wilco), Marshall Crenshaw, and many more. Lately, Chris has been 1/5th of the Big Star Quintet, performing the music of Big Star (with original drummer Jody Stephens) and this year, he'll release an album with The Salt Collective, in partnership with French musician Stéphane Schück. Daryl Hall has been one of the most identifiable voices and songwriters on records and radios for over half a century and he's still doing it. As the lead singer and principal songwriter in Hall & Oates he had a string of hits (quite a few of them co-written with Sara and Janna Allen) that included "She's Gone," "Sara Smile," "Rich Girl," "One on One," "I Can't Go For That," "Make My Dreams (Come True)," "Private Eyes," "Out of Touch," and more. And as a solo artist he's made landmark records like Sacred Songs (with King Crimson's Robert Fripp) and last year's D album, a collaboration with Dave Stewart (Eurythmics). In this comprehensive chat, we talk about Hall's entire career, including his successful web series, Live From Daryl's House , and his work with record making legends like Arif Mardin, Thom Bell, Kenny Gamble & Leon Huff, The Temptations, Todd Rundgren, Elvis Costello, and Bob Clearmountain. Grace Potter makes her Record Store Day Podcast debut to talk about her new album that is actually seventeen years old. In 2008, the Vermont-born, singer songwriter, and front person for Grace Potter & The Nocturnals, collaborated with the legendary T-Bone Burnett on a solo departure called Medicine , featuring Burnett and a crew of side players including Jim Keltner, Marc Ribot, Dennis Crouch, and Keefus Ciancia. Singer, songwriter, musician, arranger, record producer, and A&R man Swamp Dogg has done it all in his 65 plus years in the music business. Starting out in West Virginia in the 1950s, as "Little" Jerry Williams, he blazed a trail across the country with stops in Nashville, and finally his funky home in Los Angeles, which is the setting for the great new documentary, Swamp Dogg Gets His Pool Painted . Swamp spoke to us about the film, and about his long, illustrious and, at times notorious, career including his countrified album from last year, Blackgrass: From West Virginia to 125th Street , on the Oh Boy! label. With Record Store Day 2025 in the books, we continue to feature some of the talented recording artists who make the records; and this week we have one of the all-time greats. Bob Mould has enjoyed a long and illustrious career in which he has frequently been the guitarist and singer fronting superb rock trios, starting in Minnesota with the seminal '80s indie band Hüsker Dü, and Sugar in the '90s. Bob has continued to record as a solo singer/songwriter who consistently delivers edgy and emotional guitar rock, which brings us to the topic of today's episode, Mould's 15th solo album, the recently released Here We Go Crazy (Granary Music / BMG) which finds Bob's signature blistering guitar and urgent vocals once again backed by his powerful and long-serving rhythm section of Jason Narducy on bass, and friend of the show, Jon Wurster on the drums. As Christmas nears, we caught up with the legendary rock vocalist Steve Perry, a certified Rock & Roll Hall of Famer who first made his name as the former lead singer for Journey before going on to a successful solo career with era-defining '80s hits like "Oh Sherrie" and "Foolish Heart." The occasion for this chat is the release of Perry's Holiday themed album of sentimental standards, The Season 3 (his first for Dark Horse Records). Since Steve doesn't do many interviews, Paul seized the opportunity to ask Perry about singing for the late great Quincy Jones on "We Are The World," or the story behind Journey's "Don't Stop Believin'" ending up in the finale of HBO's The Sopranos . Joe Boyd has had many job descriptions over the course of his nearly sixty-year career in music, and there was simply no way to cover everything in this conversation. That said, Paul and Joe focus on Boyd's important new book, And The Roots of Rhythm Remain: A Journey Through Global Music , and themes of cultural cross-pollination in music, the birth of hip hop and ska, the reason Hitler spared the life of virtuoso Roma guitarist Django Reinhardt, what happened with Nick Drake, and Boyd's phenomenal earlier book, the memoir, White Bicycles: Making Music in the 1960s . As a music producer, Boyd has delivered records by Nick Drake, Pink Floyd, R.E.M., Taj Mahal, Fairport Convention, Richard and Linda Thompson, Sandy Denny. He tour-managed European dates for Muddy Waters, Sister Rosetta Tharpe, and was a production manager at the 1965 Newport Folk and Jazz Festivals, before flying off to open Elektra Records' UK office in London where he and John Hopkins opened the UFO club, giving a psychedelic home to Pink Floyd and others. In 1971 he moved to Los Angeles to work for Warner Brothers Films ( Deliverance, A Clockwork Orange, and the documentary Jimi Hendrix ). In 1979, he worked for Lorne Michaels' film company, Broadway Pictures, and the following year, launched his own label, Hannibal Records, releasing works by John Cale, Richard Thompson and more, while bringing global artists such as ¡Cubanismo!, Toumani Diabaté, Ali Farka Touré, Trio Bulgarka, and Songhai, to western audiences. Nada Surf front person Matthew Caws chats with Paul about the themes and inspirations behind his band's shiny new album Moon Mirror (New West Records) and reflects on the band's three-decades making records, including tales of being mentored by the late great Ric Ocasek, having an early hit with "Popular," and working on the new one at the legendary Rockfield Studios in Monmouthshire, Wales. UK breakout band The Heavy Heavy co-founders Georgie Fuller and William Turner are here to unpack their debut full-length album One Of A Kind (ATO Records), the followup to last year's 7-song EP, Life and Life Only . Recorded mostly at Turner’s studio in Brighton, England, One Of A Kind finds the band leaning away from Laurel Canyon-esque folk-rock to fully embrace their British roots, finding a particularly crucial inspiration in the gritty and groove-heavy hedonism of the mid-1970s Rolling Stones. They're nice people making compelling retro-tinged modern rock. There's kind of a theme to this week's show, which is admittedly a bit of a mashup of two previous episodes plus a new chat with Travis & Lisa from The Guestroom in Louisville, KY. It all started last summer, when Lisa and Travis flew to London to see Blur in concert at the legendary Wembley Stadium. Cut to this year, and the July 26 release of the Blur Live At Wembley set. Paul caught up with Travis & Lisa to debrief them on what it was like to actually be there. Woo Hoo! Well, Blur's Graham Coxon has recently been playing with Dhani Harrison, so we took this opportunity to re-post Paul's chat with Dhani earlier this year. Topics included working with his dad, George Harrison, who as you probably know was in The Beatles. Well, THAT made us want to close this week's episode with a reprise of Paul's conversation with the legendary drummer from The Beatles, Ringo Starr. Yeah, yeah, yeah, we got an actual Beatle! So many connections here, and that's not even including the fact that both Blur and The Beatles were signed to the Parlophone label in the UK! Say "Beetlebum" three times and you're there.
