Species Unite

"But it makes a lot of sense especially when you think about how traditional healers and shamans have worked, they haven't felt that separation from nature like Western medics do. And so to rely on the knowledge of other species actually makes a lot of sense. It's probably a lot more than we know at the moment." - Jaap de Roode Jaap de Roode is a biology professor at Emory University, and he is the author of an astonishing new book called Doctors by Nature How Ants, Apes, and Other Animals Heal Themselves . I say astonishing because I had no idea about so much of what he explores in his book. It never occured to me to consider that other species use medicine and have been healing themselves forever. Jaap tells stories of animals across nature, from bumblebees to chimpanzees, how they use plants and natural substances to treat infections, to ward off parasites, to self-medicate. There's so much that we have learned from them, and there's so much more that we still can.…

Reags gets together with Clem for this episode to have a therapy session about their beloved New York Knicks. The season is over, but as everyone knows it's officially Knicks SZN as they attempt to find a new head coach, have a star going through a torn ACL injury and have a top-10 pick in the upcoming draft. This episode goes all over the place. The guys talk about the Jeff Hornacek firing and what they made of his era before getting into potential candidates for the open position. There's a trip down memory lane as they talk about the 90s teams and the Allan Houston free agency signing. After that they talk about the draft and who they'd like to see the Knicks pick before talking themselves into getting Kawhi Leonard. It's truly off the rails as there is depression, tears, laughter and flat out therapy.…

Villanova has won the 2018 national championship with a 79-62 victory over Michigan, which of course means we had to recap it right away. Reags was joined by Ben Brust for the episode to talk about the game, but more importantly Villanova as a whole. This is now the second title in three years to go with 4 Big East titles in five years. The story was obviously Donte DiVincenzo going off for 31 points as the sixth man. Brust and Reags talk about his performance, Jalen Brunson's career through three years at Villanova and the development of the other players on the squad. They also get into the historical standpoint of this team when we heard all along there wasn't a scary team in the country.…

Reags is joined in this episode with former Wisconsin guard Ben Brust to recap the absolutely wild start to the NCAA Tournament. It started with upsets to Arizona and Wichita State before we saw a No. 16 team beat a No. 1 seed for the first time. Then there were crazy comebacks in Nashville that took out both Cincinnati schools. Oh, there was also Syracuse shocking Michigan State and impressive victories by Duke, Villanova and Kentucky. They recap all the crazy events to get you caught up. With how wild college basketball has been all season, was this something that we could have saw coming? Finally, they talk about the 16 teams left and what matchups they are looking forward to in the second weekend. Reags is joined by SB Nation's Mike Rutherford on Selection Sunday to breakdown the bracket. The two get started with general takeaways with the bracket, but of course there's the ultimate question. Would you rather watch that bracket reveal show every year or Jennifer Hudson's version of One Shining Moment? After that they go into game breakdowns. Who are the teams that they think can pull off upsets or make a deep run? What are the best conspiracy theories out there? What teams got snubbed/didn't deserve to get in? They naturally get off the rails talking about a new tournament idea for some of the worst teams in the country. A big time preview show today as Reags is joined by Sam Vecenie of the Athletic, Bearcat Journal's Chad Brendel and Aaron Torres of the Athletic and KSR. It's conference tournament week, so what else would they all be talking about besides previewing the tournaments this week. Vecenie starts the show to talk about the Pac-12. Is Arizona State really in danger of missing the NCAA Tournament? Who is the one team that you should keep an eye on as a possible bubble team that we aren't talking about and what to make of Arizona. After that, Brendel joins the show to talk about the Cincinnati/Wichita State game from Sunday before getting into the AAC Tournament. Who would be matchups in the NCAA Tournament that Wichita/Cincinnati would and wouldn't want to see? Finally, Aaron joins Reags to talk about the SEC Tournament, which is arguably the most wide open conference tournament this year. Plus, will Michael Porter Jr., actually play? Reags is joined this episode by ESPN's Fran Fraschilla to talk about the Big 12 and preview the Big 12 Tournament. However, the show starts with Xavier assistant coach Travis Steele to talk about the Big East. Steele talks about the depth of the Big East and how tough it was to go from celebrating at home after the win over Providence to play DePaul for the outright Big East title. Along with that Steele talks about what makes Villanova so good and how Xavier goes about recruiting with that in mind. After that Reags and Fran talk about the Big 12 and if there's a legit chance that nine teams could get into the NCAA Tournament. Because it's the Big 12 there's of course Trae Young and Oklahoma talk. Who is the real Trae Young? Is it the one we saw to start the year or is it the one from the last five weeks? They also discuss West Virginia's inconsistency and what makes Chris Beard so special at Texas Tech. This year it's obviously a week earlier than normal out at Madison Square Garden. What do the guys think of that and how would they set up the venues for the future? They then get into taking a look at odds and if any value plays stand out. From there they spend some time talking a lot about Michigan vs Nebraska. That's set up to be the most intriguing quarterfinal game if Michigan beats Iowa. Can Nebraska be the fifth team in the NCAA Tournament and just how many games do they need to win to feel comfortable? Then there's a discussion about whether this tournament will be chalk or crazy. Becker talks about recruiting strategies and how he's had to adapt to the movement of the small ball era and emphasis on the 3-point line. After that he talks about scheduling and some of the problems the Catamounts ran into this year with a loaded nonconference schedule. Finally he talks about getting ready to play in a win or go home conference tournament and whether a coach is okay with losing a game to snap a long streak. After that Ben Brust joins the show to talk about the Louisville news. Why is vacating wins the dumbest penalty the NCAA can hand out? Brust then talks about Frank Kaminsky's jersey retirement night and shares stories from being in Madison for that before talking about the difference of Final Four contenders and title contenders.
