A daily Christian devotional based on real-life experiences
Ecclesiastes 3:1 – To every thing there is a season, and a time to every purpose under the heaven. (KJV) Things come. Things go. Life changes. Often these changes, even in keeping with the times, can throw a person for a loop. Such was the case when Rev. Robin Ross called to inform me that March 31, 2025, would be the last day of publishing new material for the PresbyCan Daily Devotional. It all began on May 25, 1996, as his brainchild, and has been a huge part of his life's passion and work for almost 30 years … learning to grow it as each new phase of technology advanced. He has told, in four devotionals, the story of how it developed: What God Has Prepared , Death Of A Vision , Bread On The Waters , and All One Body . But much, much more than that, is how he patiently worked with each of the contributors through the years. Some were accomplished writers, and some, such as myself, were not. In response to a single question to him in 1997, he suggested I write about it — although I stated that I wasn't a writer. In the following years, guided and edited, I ended up writing some 400 devotionals. The Daily (as it used to be called) was one of the families that Rev. Ross raised and/or guided to a point in time where his part in each one's purpose was fulfilled: his children, his congregations, and now Daily . Though Rev. Ross is the impetus that kept Daily moving, it was not without the help of staff and writers — volunteers all — and the thousands of devoted readers, each and every one of whom will feel some degree of loss. The numbers are staggering … from a handful of writers in the beginning to a total of 516, and from 700 readers to a peak of 6,200. What does one do when their life's purpose as they knew it is fulfilled, when what was familiar to them is over? Or is it? Take the words in Isaiah 30:21 – "Your ears shall hear a word behind you, saying, 'This is the way, walk in it,' whenever you turn to the right hand or whenever you turn to the left." (NKJV) Or those in Psalm 32:8 – "I will instruct you and teach you in the way you should go; I will counsel you and watch over you." (NIV) This is a prime example of the sayings, Let go and let God or Thy will, Lord, not mine. New devotionals for the Daily may have ended their season , but what they were will never end as they'll be on the Internet in perpetuity. What a legacy for Robin Ross to leave behind: minister, editor, teacher, mentor. After allowing ourselves a time to grieve this loss, we hope we can come to a place best stated by that famous writer of children's books … Dr. Seuss: "Don't cry because it's over; smile because it happened." It seems only fitting to close with Rev. Ross's prayer in his devotional entitled, All One Body . Prayer: Today, Lord, we give You thanks for Your wisdom in making us part of the body of Christ. We rejoice in the volunteers that You have placed in the Daily family: writers, readers, prayer warriors, and staff. May our lives together give You the glory that You deserve above all others. In Christ's name, we pray. Amen. Mary Daniel < marydee@shaw.ca > Nanaimo, British Columbia, Canada Encourage Today's Writer My Closing Remarks Since I announced the end of new material for the PresbyCan Daily Devotional, I have been greatly encouraged by the outpouring of appreciative messages which I have received. Thank you for letting me know what the Daily has meant to you! Since my announcement two weeks ago, my thinking has evolved full-circle in regard to my plan to turn Daily into a low-maintenance website. I had originally thought of ending the daily emails and presenting ten random devotionals on the home webpage. But my son suggested presenting automatically each day a pre-selected set of devotionals from either that date or the special day in previous years, so that, for example, on Easter Day, Easter devotionals would appear. I had also announced, however, that we were going to continue the PrayerLine feature, because it is the most-visited page on our website. Last Friday evening, a reader asked whether the PrayerLine requests could continue to go out automatically in a daily email. It was only then that I realized that such an email could also automatically contain a selection of devotionals just like the website . So, the Daily emails will continue! The key words are "automatically" and "low-maintenance", which mean that I will be able to watch over the website — from a distance! My responsibilities were getting too heavy. It was just time! There are a few thoughts that I would like to share with you as we close this chapter of life. Firstly, we have no idea of what effects may result from the actions that we do in obedience to the Lord. Undoubtedly, the devotionals were read by thousands more than just the people who read them by email, on the website, forwarded by friends, or as "likes" on Facebook. We also have very little or no idea how the written word influenced the spiritual lives of those who read it. What a great day it will be when the Lord finally reveals what our efforts have contributed to fulfilling His plan for His people! Secondly, I want to encourage every Christian to bend every effort as an obedient disciple to do what the Lord desires us to do. May we all look forward, as I do, to the possibility of hearing those amazing words that the Lord spoke first to His disciples in a parable: "Well done, good and faithful servant; … Enter into the joy of your lord." (Matthew 25:23 NKJV) I especially want to recognize the faithful work of our dedicated volunteer staff. Jane Anne Waller was the first to come on staff to help with the subscriptions and feedback. James T. Hurd has been my backup for reviewing theology and proper editing. Mary Jane Hanson, Elaine Ingalls Hogg, and Sharon Cook have assisted in receiving and processing devotionals. Garnet Schenck and George Myers have moderated the PrayerLine requests, and Terry Folster has posted devotionals to Facebook each day. Thank you, all! I would also like to thank my wife, Evelyn, and our children for the uncountable hours that they gave me away from them, and for their support over all those years. To you, dear reader, thank you for sticking with us. Although we may not have met in person, I look forward to seeing you in heaven! Fika (fee'-kuh) – a Scandinavian custom of slowing down to enjoy a moment with friends and loved ones over coffee and a sweet treat. I first learned about this charming Scandinavian custom of fika through Norwegian missionary friends in Madagascar. Fika is deemed so important to Scandinavian daily life that it can be observed at any time of day. Our Norwegian friends invited my friend Bonnie and me to join them one day for their mid-morning fika, which was part party and part coffee break. I've since appropriated the idea of fika, adapting it to become an occasional fun activity here in my retirement community. I make a Scandinavian treat, and others contribute by bringing baked items that they enjoy making. Cardamom buns are a fika favourite, but there are many delightful Scandinavian treats to sample. We've so far enjoyed Fika in the Garden on a beautiful early summer day in June, Fika in the Fall with autumn treats, and February Fika to celebrate Valentine's Day. We who love the Lord can also enjoy a sort of spiritual fika through fellowship with fellow believers. It's good to sit down with a friend and talk about spiritual things over a cup of coffee. Not only do we encourage one another as we share our thoughts and prayers, but it also honours and pleases God when we talk about Him. Malachi 3:16 – Then those who feared and loved the Lord spoke often of him to each other. And he had a Book of Remembrance drawn up in which he recorded the names of those who feared him and loved to think about him. (TLB) We can also have a fika with God, spending time with Him, remembering what He has done, thanking Him for our many blessings, talking over with Him our future hopes and dreams, enjoying the beauty of the world around us, and turning our burdens over to Him. Quiet times with God like this help to deepen our faith and strengthen our bond with Him. Psalm 46:10a – Be still, and know that I am God! (NLT) This time of quiet reflection can then give us the impetus to get up and continue on with the tasks ahead of us. Just as a coffee break helps to carry us through a busy day of work, so a spiritual fika helps to give the balance of quiet times interspersed with the mundane activities of daily life. Let's think about times and ways to slow down to enjoy a spiritual fika, either with friends or with God — or both — in a quiet, meditative place. Such a time is refreshing and rejuvenating. It's good for the soul! Prayer: Dear loving heavenly Father, we know that it pleases You when we make You part of our everyday life. May we frequently take time to stop our busy activities and think about You and Your part in our lives. Help us to slow down and enjoy these moments with friends — and with You. Amen.…
A Revisited Devotional from November 25, 1997. Revelation 20:12b – And another book was opened, which is the Book of Life. (NKJV) Recently, I saw a story in the newspaper from one of the southern United States. This particular place apparently has some type of "Social Register", a large book listing the socially in people in this community. If you were not listed, you were in the out group. The news story said a local family which had been very prominent in the past, was dropped from this issue, to make way for other people. Some family members were very angry that their family was no longer to be considered among the social select. I didn't know there was still such a thing in print, anywhere. I wouldn't be in one. I suspect most people would not. People are busy with other things these days. In the social structure of this particular town, either you're in or you're out . That's very much human nature. People divide into groups, from the schoolyard on up. The tragic thing is that after we split up into groups, then we reject and cut off the people we feel don't belong to our particular group. It's not like that in God's kingdom! Everyone is wanted. All who want to be, can be part of the in crowd. Jesus said, "I will never turn away anyone who comes to me." (John 6:37b GNT) The songs and creeds of the Christian church say that the fellowship of the church is way, way beyond the people who meet for coffee at the end of the service. It is people around the world who have chosen to follow Jesus Christ. Some people may feel that being part of the in social crowd is the most important thing in life. Each of us is called to follow our Lord. If we do, we will one day find our names in the very best book of all: the Lord's Book of Life! Prayer: Lord, jockeying for position and status over one another is something we do far too well and far too often. May we see the world through Your eyes. There is no us and them , just people You love, and we are called to love, because we love You. Amen.…
2 Corinthians 4:16 – That is why we never give up. Though our bodies are dying, our spirits are being renewed every day. (NLT) "God gave me that gift, but I guess now I can't use it anymore." I heard the discouragement in Mom's voice as she spilled her despair into my lap. I had taken her for her weekly hair-fixing appointment. As we sat in the driveway, she pined over her situation. Mom had a rare gift that most musicians don't. She had been playing the piano since she was a little girl. The instructor hadn't taught her everything, however. Mom could do some things an instructor can't teach. She could listen to a piece of music and then play it by ear. Mom could also take a piece of music and lower or raise the key, depending on a singer's voice. Another rare gift that no one had taught her. Unfortunately, dementia took its toll — and continued to take things away. First, Mom lost her ability to drive. Confusion made it dangerous for her and others on the road. Mom had been playing the piano in church since she was a little girl, but Bell's palsy forced her to give that up, too. She couldn't see well out of one eye. It was too much to ask someone to drive her to church and let her play in her condition. So, she resigned and told the music leader she couldn't do it anymore. She still had her keyboard at home and could play it, but it wouldn't be the same. I had no comforting words to give her. But I thought about a M*A*S*H episode my wife and I had watched a few nights before. Colonel Potter had overlooked a piece of shrapnel, which almost caused a young soldier to die. Another surgeon had to fix his slip-up. Potter responded by flying off the handle at everyone for no good reason. Finally, he called in his psychologist friend and confessed why: he was afraid to perform another surgery, although he had been operating all his life. The psychologist told Potter that someday Potter would lose his touch. "We all do." Whatever that touch is. For Mom, it was playing the piano at church. Aging is no fun. Aches and pains usually follow it as our bodies begin decaying and things start malfunctioning. But the emotional pains are far worse: not being able to do some of the things we once enjoyed. I have always loved hiking in the mountains, but bad knees and a bad back now prevent me from doing it. Everyone's body differs, but we cannot prevent aging. But God doesn't want us to slip into depression or walk around discouraged every day. In today's verse, Paul said God renewed his spirit daily. Our spirits, our souls — the real us — don't age. And one day, God will give us a new body with no aches, pains, diseases, or limitations — a body fit for the new heaven and earth He will make. Until then, as we face the aches of aging, we must keep adjusting to the changes age brings. We must face them knowing God walks with us, and trust Him to keep giving us opportunities to serve Him and others — even if those opportunities look different than they once did. Let's not allow discouragement to get to us as we face the aches of aging. Prayer: Father, help us to face the aging process without discouragement or depression. Amen.…
A Revisited Devotional from July 18, 1999. Romans 11:33a – O the depth of the riches both of the wisdom and knowledge of God! (KJV) Although I am by no means accomplished in playing the guitar, I can actually bring pleasant sounds out of it. I am getting better at it. There is a true sense of accomplishment in bringing a tune out of that instrument. I'm proud and amazed that my fingers are learning and strengthening. Where once there were only plinkings and plunkings, now there is deliberate plucking in patterns that unfold in melodies and harmonies. Reading music and converting it into sound is like opening a surprise. I know it's something good, but I can't quite figure out what it is until I work through the strings and paper and lines and notes that hold it together. But when it does open up, I say, "Oh yes, I see now. Isn't it lovely!" Then, I want to turn it over in my hands, try it again, play with it. When it's time to put the guitar away, I think about what it will sound like when I work the strings and fingers and paper and memory again. I find that reading Scripture is like reading music. It sometimes seems a big jumble until I work through it. Just reading the words doesn't always bring out the deeper tones and harmonies and meanings. It is when we "work" the Scripture into our lives and let it play out in our actions, that we can truly grasp how beautiful it is. Prayer: Lord, You are good. Thank You that You reveal Yourself to us. Help us to be doers of Your Word that we might know You more. Amen.…
2 Timothy 3:16 – All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness. (ESV) To keep my brain ticking, I use a free language learning program. The app reports that I've been successful in completing the lessons for 730 days in a row. As a result of my competitive nature, maintaining a really long streak actually becomes high motivation to login every day. So, I am really focused to succeed, yet I am not truly the successful doer of 730 consecutive days of lessons. One of the program's concessions is to make an allowance for missing a day by using what it calls a streak-freeze — a kind of cheat. When a day's input is missed, to avoid the streak being reset to zero, you can automatically use a streak-freeze, if you have saved them up. Initially, they are limited to only three in about three months: not many. I have needed several streak-freeze days to keep the streak going over the previous two years. So, I ask: why is my desire to keep a streak going sometimes more pressing than my desire to read my Bible every day? Have I been sucked into the challenge of learning over and above hearing from God? As it is, I spend enough time in front of the computer. Surely, the Bible should come first and not be supplanted by a mere program. For sixty years, through school, and finally, university religious studies training and teaching, I consider myself familiar with the Word of God. However, I have acquired the conceit of thinking I know what God is saying through my previous encounters with His Word and past revelation. Sadly, if I am not praying, asking for and engaging with the Holy Spirit's illumination to hear from God today and to aid my reading of the Bible, my mind — if not yours — wanders off into the world, because of the absence of God's inspiring influence through the daily reading of His Word. For me, prayer is just the start of the dialogue with God, where we first become still and wait, wanting to hear His voice, asking for the presence of the Holy Spirit. How else can we expect to hear from God when reading Scripture? The Bible is often God's unpretentious way of speaking truth to us for today! In truth, sometimes, by an act of grace, His Word leaps from the page — no prayers needed — but not every day! Does it matter if we miss a day? Can we use a streak-freeze to get by until tomorrow without reading? Yes, but there are no cheats to hearing from God, only lessons to be learnt about missing God's voice for the day and prayers for grace later as He looks to our return. Prayer: Lord, here I am before the throne of Your grace again. Please fan into flame those embers of longing for reading and hearing Your Word to feed my soul for today, for we need You. In Jesus' name, I pray. Amen.…
What I love most about being a mom is my children's forgetfulness. I remember many days when, as a mom with small children, I would want to run screaming down the street. You know those days when the bickering never stops, the spilled drinks could cause a flash flood, and "Mom" is seemingly the word to bellow when one is touched by one's sibling! Those days that stretched my patience beyond the limits, when bedtime could not come fast enough, still stick in my mind. I remember at day's end, when "Walton style" we would say our goodnights, and I would add, "Sorry Mom was so grouchy today", and from their rooms, I would hear in unison, "That's okay, Mom. You're a good mom"! I want to be able to forgive that easily! Even now, many years since I have heard those sweet voices coming from the bedrooms in my house, I remember the love that was cheerfully given to that weary mom, and the forgiveness that overflowed, even though I felt undeserving of it. Now, my grown daughters often say wonderful things to me that sometimes take me aback. I recall all the mistakes I made as a parent. I remember how many times I felt like a failure as a mom, and I wonder why they don't remember my mistakes and failures. But yet, my forgetful children love me. Isn't that grace? Jesus said that we should all become like little children, and I know why! They are so very forgetful, just as He is. As we ask Him to forgive our sins, the Bible says He also forgets them. They are thrown into the sea of forgetfulness! Hebrews 8:12 – For I will forgive their wickedness and will remember their sins no more. (NIV) Micah 7:19 – You will again have compassion on us; you will tread our sins underfoot and hurl all our iniquities into the depths of the sea. (NIV) It's funny how those we try to instruct often instruct us. Prayer: Thank You, Lord, for the forgetfulness of children. Thank You that You are forgetful of our forgiven sins, even though we don't deserve it. Help us to be just as forgiving and forgetful of the sins that are committed against us. Amen.…
