The War and Treaty’s Michael and Tanya Trotter grew up in Cleveland, Ohio, and Washington, DC, respectively, but both have family roots in the South. They also grew up in the musical traditions of their churches – Tanya in the Black Baptist Church and Michael in the Seventh Day Adventist Church – where they learned the power of song to move people. After becoming a father at a very young age, Michael eventually joined the armed forces and served in Iraq and Germany, where he took up songwriting as a way of dealing with his experiences there. Meanwhile Tanya embarked on a singing and acting career after a breakthrough appearance in Sister Act 2 alongside Whoopi Goldberg and Lauryn Hill. Now, after a long and sometimes traumatic journey, Michael and Tanya are married, touring, winning all sorts of awards, and set to release their fifth album together, and their fourth as The War and Treaty. Sid talks to Michael and Tanya about the new record, Plus One , as well as their collaboration with Miranda Lambert, what it was like to record at FAME studios in Muscle Shoals, and how they’re blending country, soul, gospel, and R&B. Today, we invite the talented musical artist Anik Khan to the show, but he's not here to talk about hip hop. He's here to talk about everything important in his upbringing that led him to who he has become today, and why hip hop was a necessary decision afterwards. We talk about Anik's purpose more than just his story. Also, anime. Outro // Anik Khan - Mantra…
Why is Ali Reza Malik single? Other than the fact that he's pretty weird? Looks, at best, a 7.5? Has an average yearly salary of $30,000? Wants to name one of his kids after a Pokemon? Owns exactly two suits, neither of them fitting? Hold on, why are we doing this episode. Also, we take a review of Atif's Halal / Haram project, with hints of what's next to come. Outro // Arcade Fire - Haiti…
Ali Ateeq is our honored guest today, here to reply to some of the basic behaviors we outlined in the last episode. Also, Ali gives us a new spin on his career path - why he's becoming a Doctor and the career's relevance in the Pakistani-American community. Amaad Bhatti comes on to co-host with Atif Ateeq, replacing Ali Reza Malik, who's out for vacation. See more at podcastan.tumblr.com Outro Track: Zoo Babies - Dinka…
Today Atif and Ali talk about their paths that led them to today, and how the portrait of both at 30 years old is nothing like what either planned at 20. The conclusion? Stop planning so much. You won't stick to it, anyway. Outro track // The Fifth Dimension - Aquarius See more at podcastan.tumblr.com…
Not all of our material makes it to the final podcast. Here's a clip from a lost episode where Atif nerd-shames Ali.
