Season 3 of the smash hit FX/Hulu show “The Bear” roared to life just days ago, but Will Poulter (the actor who plays fan-favorite Luca) and 2014 F&W Best New Chef Dave Beran had been prepping for weeks. Poulter — like his co-star Jeremy Allen White — staged with Beran at his Santa Monica restaurant Pasjoli to learn how to accurately portray a professional chef onscreen. The lessons went so well, Beran says he’d hire Poulter as a cook — even despite a messy mishap with a pastry bag. The two dished all about getting kitchen culture right on and offscreen, what it takes to be at the top of your craft, and the pure magic of a great restaurant service. Title: Emerging Cyber Security Issues of the Smart Grid Abstract: The smart grid will use automated meters, two-way digital communications technology, and advanced sensors to save energy, improve electricity efficiency and reliability. Use of these systems exposes the electrical grid to potential cyber security and privacy risks. For instance, there have been media reports of fears that a hacker could gain control of thousands, even millions, of meters and shut them off simultaneously; or a hacker might be able to dramatically increase or decrease the demand for power, disrupting the load balance on the local power grid and causing a blackout. This seminar will discuss smart grid security and privacy issues with the view to answering the following key questions, among others: • What are some potential cyber security vulnerabilities of the smart grid? • What cyber security best practices can be used to handle these vulnerabilities? • Given that smart grid is a critical infrastructure, how are government, industry, and academia working to deal with smart grid cyber security issues? • What are some unique customer privacy issues introduced by the smart grid? • What are some potential areas of research and development (R&D) with respect to R&D cyber security of the smart grid? This was a triumph! I’m making a note here: huge success! We had a great turnout. Upwards of 60 people attended ACM’s first meeting of the semester. The meeting opened with a brief description of the club, an introduction to the new ACM Officers, and information on ways to contact us. We talked about upcoming events like CES 2011, and asked members to suggest their own ideas. After a quick discussion about tutoring, we surprised Ash with a birthday cake (accompanied by the song “Still Alive”). The cake was not a lie. Happy Birthday, Ash! Finally, Dr. Kwai-Ting Lan and former officer Dale Fletter concluded the business part of the meeting by endorsing ACM, calling it a great resource for Computer Science students. With such a crowded room, the free pizza quickly disappeared. There was enough for everyone, but just barely. This was followed by a video game tournament. On one side of the room: Super Smash Brothers on the Wii. On the other side: a PlayStation 3 running Street Fighter. After roughly two hours of gaming, two people emerged victorious: Billy Saetern kicked butt at Street Fighter, and Julien Tran was crowned champion of Super Smash Brothers. Both were awarded free one-year memberships to ACM and fancy official club shirts. Congratulations, guys! It was a great first meeting, and we hope everyone continues to join us in the future. If you couldn’t make it, that’s OK. Meetings are streamed live via Ustream and can be downloaded via our podcast. Thanks for joining us! To see the video Click Here…

Title: Extreme Project Management Abstract: My presentation centers on successfully accomplishing projects and satisfying customer expectations in environments not conducive to practicing and performing best practices in project management. This presentation brings out the skill sets that every project manager must know for the negotiation of resources, working with the customer, and guiding the project team through a hostile project management environment. I use concepts developed by Doug De Carlo in his book "Extreme project management," and methodologies practiced in Agile Project Software Development to provide examples of performing best project management practices in less than ideal project development environments. Talk title: How We Entered the Cloud: Computing in the Web Abstract: We are entering a new era in computing. Application development and deliver completely in cyberspace. How did we end up in this new paradigm? What lessons from the past will apply to this future? In the modern software world, the ever increasing pressure to develop more complex applications faster with less costs coupled with the needs to have complete accessibility and portability of end applications is driving a need for a new software development and delivery model. Traditional software development models and software distribution methods will not be sufficient. To meet the needs for this advanced software model, software development, software application delivery and machine infrastructure must be ubiquitous. This means that the software development, application execution, and machine infrastructure will need to be virtual services access only with a browser. It's happening today!
