Episode Description: Jessica B. Harris may have been born and raised in New York City, but she has Tennessee roots through her father and has spent much of her life split between homes in the Northeast and the South – specifically New Orleans. For more than fifty years, she has been a college professor, a writer, and a lecturer, and her many books have earned her a reputation as an authority on food of the African Diaspora, as well as a lifetime achievement award from the James Beard Foundation. A few years back, Netflix adapted her book, High on the Hog: A Culinary Journey from Africa to America , into a 4 part docuseries. And I’m very proud to say that she’s a longtime contributor to Southern Living with a regular column called The Welcome Table. This episode was recorded in the Southern Living Birmingham studios, and Sid and Jessica talked about her mother’s signature mac and cheese, the cast-iron skillet she’d be sure to save if ever her house were on fire, and her dear friend, the late New Orleans chef Leah Chase. Mark 4 – we dive into the parables, a very important study since this is the main bulk of Jesus’s teaching in the book of Mark. I mistakingly said that this was episode 13, it isn’t. Show Notes: Robert Farrar Capon’s books on the parables: Parable of the Kingdom Parable of Grace Parable of Judgment […]…
In this episode we have a special guest, Anthony Navarro, as Lee and Michael, all discuss the distinctive features of Presbyterian government. We are back! This is Part 1 of our Sabbath discussion as it relates to Mark 2:32-3:6. Look for a part 2 coming soon (and maybe even a part 3!). Grammatical Historical Method [wikipedia] Westminster Confession of Faith 21.7, 8 7. As it is the law of nature, that, in general, a due proportion of […]
We cover Mark 3:1-6 as we move through Mark. I think Jesus is alluding to Deut 30:15-20 which on the episode I was reading from the NETS (not to be confused with the NET) translation [New English Translation of the Septuagint].
We did a whirl-winded tour covering Mark 1:37 all the way to Mark 3:6. We didn’t quite address the Sabbath issue but will in an upcoming special podcast. For more information on the beginning of Mark 2, see Lee’s sermon, the power to forgive. For the story of the leper see my blog post: Mark […]
