Baseball came to Santa Fe in the 1880s thanks to the military camps at Fort Union and Fort Wingate where semipro competitions were held. St. Michael’s High School was also instrumental in bringing baseball to Santa Fe when it opened in 1859. Santa Fe High School, the Santa Fe Indian School and Albuquerque High School soon followed by holding promoted baseball competition in the capitol city. As well as locals businesses, like the Mechanics baseball team also sponsored adult teams.
Since there were no organized leagues in those days like Little League, boys played numerous sandlot games in Santa Fe neighborhoods. According to Santa Fe old-timers, the game that attracted the most attention was the annual game played between the Canyon Road gang and the Agua Fria barrio.
Baseball was also popular at the Penitentiary of New Mexico where their team played exhibition games against teams in Santa Fe and Albuquerque. All of those games were played at the penitentiary filed with the inmates as spectators. Several of the local mining companies had sponsored baseball leagues like the Madrid Miners and the Copper League, which was financed by the China Copper Company. Legend has it that many of the miners were former major league players in need of regular work in the mines.
Santa Fe has come a long way from the days where children organized their own games in sandlots. Today, there is a vibrant Little League program for both boys and girls. For their parent’s generation the Santa Fe Fuego baseball team was launched in 2012. The team hosts competing teams at Ft. Marcy during the summer from northern and southern New Mexico as part of the Pecos League.
For the past two hundred years baseball has become an integral part of summer in Santa Fe. Let’s play ball!
